No doubt most everyone has seen this auction on eBay:

Very interesting pieces and I hope they make it through to the conclusion of the auction. Wanted to get the board's thoughts on whether or not you believe this is a set? It appears that they would go on opposite hands but I've never seen a set that looks like this. I know Number9 has done extensive research on this era of glove so maybe he can enlighten us. Also, do you think the button has been replaced? Definitely an interesting piece worth discussing.

This IS a very intriguing set. We know, that early catchers, used the left hand full hand (if they were right hand throwers) and a cutoff padded glove for the right hand. Now, if I'm seeing this correctly, the small or cutoff glove
has a hole for the thumb (which it would need) for a throwing hand glove.
But I'd have to see it up close. So, it makes sense that the bigger mitt would fit on the left and the cutoff would serve as padding for the right hand. Either that or the cutoff is a left hand fit and these were used separately. This is a supposition.
I've not seen anything like this sold in combination on eBay.

There has been some chatter on this one and a couple of us have already reached out to the seller to let them know that we hope they don’t get tempted to end this auction early as they could be pleasantly surprised with the interest and outcome.

I like it. I too have some questions on the glove but you never know with a set this early. Anything is possible. Looks good to me. Very cool for the hobby.

It should be fun to watch as the auction continues, although the real action won't take place until the very end. I'm eager to see what price they fetch - I'm guessing they'll exceed the price of the last Gehrig zipper that was on eBay (approximately 8 grand). Wonder if a collector will snag them or an auction house.

It would be fun to do some research and see if we could find a picture to see if this was actually a set.

Fun to see stuff like this pop up every once in a while.

Very interesting pair. Oddly enough, this fingerless style was a new one, at least to me, and it now takes first place on my list of known examples with five.

I make a pair just like this. Mine are a full set of fingerless. I've never seen a pairing with a mitt like that. It may or may not be the actual partner for that fingerless. The button on the ebay glove is without a doubt a replacement. The early snaps had a tendency to fall out and many are missing.

I had a chuckle when I saw the one on eBay because I thought I saw a fingerless like it last week.

I thought the fingerless had metal snaps - thanks for clearing that up.

It's Tuesday night; about 46 hours left on this unexpected pair. I'm curious about exactly how the strap on that little mitten glove attaches. Does anyone see a button there? It almost looks like there might have once been a buckle with the crimp in the strap. Just curious. I can't wait to see where these two wind up. $2325 and counting! :?:

Button was on the longer strap and hooked in on the left of the glove

The photography could have been set up a little better. The smaller "throwing hand" glove was shot from the side rather than the top to bottom as you can see, with the little finger loops to the left. Button is obvious.
the catching (left hand) mitten has us wondering if there was a button on the left side that slipped into a button hole on the right side but the shot doesn't show enough of either.
We're used to seeing a pair like this with a full glove (not mitten) left and
cutoff throwing right or two pair of cutoff gloves which probably led to a lot
of damaged fingers. Intermediate to this full mitten was probably the protected, harder leather, finger tips on the left hand.
Just an idea.

I know that I don't post all that often, and never do just for the 'ol heck of it (although I probably should cuz I love talking with you guys), but WOW, 12 LARGE!!!

I just left the auction up to see what happened then went to give my son a bath....it was like $5000 and change...11 minutes later, and here we are all. Congrats to the winner....I think, right!?!?!?!? :D
