Next time you're over to Nocona and Nokona, check on their history again.
I've worked for the company for 32 years as a consultant and have had a hand in some of their histories.
Fact is, a few workers for the Nocona Boot Company there left and started Nocona Leather Goods and made women's purses and men's billfolds, this about 1926. Company didn't fare to well and the bank took it over in the 1930s when son in law of one of the bankers, Robert Storey took it over and found same problems, and until "Doc" H. B. Hughes, a sporting goods rep from Dallas, made contact with Nocona and ushered them into the sporting goods business, making football and baseball equipment. The company under Storey and with some guidance from Doc. became very successful. Robert's grandson Rob, currently directs operations there with help from his dad, Robert E., chairman.
I've used Nokonas since 1956. The people there are among the finest folks in the world, right down to everyone I've met there.
The Nocona Boot Company split up years ago with the original founder's two sons, Justin Brothers, going to Fort Worth to start Justin Boots. Enid Justin, the founder's daughter, stayed in Nocona to run the boot company. She died a few years ago and the Justin Company bought the plant, ran it a few years and closed it over five years ago.
When the fire wiped out the Nocona Athletic Goods Co., year or so ago, they restored the operation to the old boot company located on the main highway.
I may still have some pics of this.
If you wanna buy American and want a glove, this is the place.
