Good glove photos are tough to find

This is from a 1990's article in Sports Illustrated called Glove Story and the only photo I could find of the man and his glove, Forrest "Joe" Orrell.

here's a photo of Dizzy Dean with a D&M Chuck Klein model G92 glove.

a Baseball team in 1888. Nice uniforms and the engraved trophy pitcher with drinking glasses is pretty cool.


The catcher has on a fingerless throwing glove and a full fingered and lace-up catching glove. The catching glove may also be a tipped finger model.

A turn of the century photo. The catchers mitt has metal snaps along the heel instead of the typical lace through eyelets. H.W. Price had a patent for such a design in 1891. Pretty cool.

A photo of 18 year old Hal Newhouser playing with Beaumont of the Texas League in 1939.

He appears to be using a Wilson glove with an H-web. The small Wilson patch was on some gloves in the late 1930's.


A photo of Newhouser in 1953 near the end of his career.

Rawlings introduced the patented lace pocket RR model in 1949. That lacing was integrated with the heel lacing and was adjustable. The glove Newhouser is wearing has closely spaced pocket lacing independent of the heel lace. This was introduced 1953-54. It was only made for one year. It's rare to find one of these models now. An example is the model BD on the right from a 1954 catalog. After 1954, Rawlings used a wide space pocket lace that was used on many of their models and is fairly common to find now.

The D&M bucklebacks must have been popular gloves. Here's Bill Rogell with a G98 Joe Cronin model and Charlie Gehrenger with one I won't even guess at. Below them is the only photo I've found of Chuck Klein with a glove. It's from the first or second All Star Game. I was hoping it was his signature D&M lace back, but nope, another unknown buckleback.

Crazy how long it took for laced fingers to catch on.
Here's Tuck Stainback with a cool one. Reach and Spalding carried versions of this glove. The catalog listing is Spalding's Eddie Farrell model from 1934.

Ernie Banks from a Wilson Advisory Staff photo. I believe the glove is an Early Wynn A2054 PM. I think it was their only model with eyelets for the crotch lacing. The catalog listing is from 1956 and that model was listed from then until 1958.

Paul "Dizzy" Trout with a laced pinkie and ring finger buckleback. The Spalding Giant was their top of the line buckleback starting in the early 1930's. By 1939 it carried Eric McNair's endorsement.
