Beige Glove on Ebay

found it funny that one of the people who made a comment told others to stay away as this glove is only for the people in the know. But everyone bidding on it as little or no feedback

what model glove is it

I think it is a Victor or Victor,Wright & Ditson glove made some time between the period 1914-18 at which time Victor merged with Wright and Ditson. The "Berkeley Model" in the W&D catalog is listed as model FSB. The Victor catalogs are a little lacking in that period but the ebay glove is model 15G, a Victor number. There may have been intermingling of model numbers as the companies were merging. The logo is very faint unfortunately but it looks a little like this:

Ok, understand it's a Victor or VWD, but what am I missing? $861 more than a little high for it. It's nice, but there are too many issues with it for that price, in my opinion. Was it simply two overzealous bidders, great marketing by the seller (getting bidders riled up with the "in the know" comment), some shilling, or something else? I guess I'm with Murph, NOT "in the know"!

eBay can do that to items. People get over-zealous and don't want to lose an item.
I've lost a few auctions where the glove went for much more than it should have, but apparently the other guy really didn't want to lose it.

I expected it to end around $700+ given the brand, the color, and the condition. Clearly, two people were bidding to win as the final two bids were well above the third highest. I'd guess that both parties expected to pay less than their top-all bids would suggest.

Wow, between this one and the VWD that sold in the Legendary / Mastro auction, there seems to be a premium on the white VWD's. Makes me feel good about the one I have. I'm surprised at the price given the lack of tag and that the glove doesn't appear to be top line.

I'm with William in that I'm not surprised it cleared $700. Full disclosure, though, I wasn't close to the high bidder because I have several off-white versions already. I think it is a beauty that would look great in the middle of a display. As for flaws, all I saw was the broken lace which is an easy quick fix. Rob

It is a great looking glove, but for that kind of cash I'd expect less wear to the stampings. Also agree with Brett that it's surprising that it did that well being a midline model with a generic button and no tag. Light colored gloves in nice shape must be in demand these days:

One of the cool parts of glove collecting is that even the experienced guys like different things and have different opinions on what things should sell for, which sort of brings up an interesting question:

Why aren't more of these available if the collectors who have them think they are selling for much more than they are worth?

There's an underbidder out there who wants a similar model for $850 ... put one out there with an $850 BIN or reserve. If mint Mantles and white gloves are hot then capitalize if you aren't absolutely in love with yours. Sometimes buyers need to step up because of a lack of availability even if the gloves aren't "rare", like I tried to do on a buckleback full web a while back. People were debating whether or not they worth a premium and I was trying to pay/trade a premium but got no responses. I can understand it because nobody wants to sell their good stuff but that's sort of the point on this white glove ... they aren't readily available.

and that is also the reason why you see a newer glove like the McCovey go so high. There is not a lot of mint gloves out there.

I think if you are in this game for the investment side of it, you are a fool if you are not buying mint gloves from all era's.
Stop and think about it, a glove made in 1980 is now 31 years old

Completely agree. We can all debate what percentage a mint glove should theoretically bring over a NM version, but an individual one is "worth" what someone will pay for it, and that worth is driven largely by availability. I used to tease a local collector friend (who is reading this but shy) about paying excessive amounts for mint 50s big name players, to the point where I called him nuts to his face on several occasions. I turned down offers to buy some of them when he was thinning down a little, only to see them quickly sell for much more. The stuff that we typically hold on to with clenched fingers has large upside auction potential, it just isn't always consistent.

Just after the beige glove ended on ebay, ebay seller hammontree3152 listed 5-6 white vintage gloves. Here's one of them. A big sale on ebay sometimes brings out similar models hoping to catch a little of that earlier action.

I know beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but I think that Victor was a couple tiers higher than any of the others with it's contrasting welting and front stamping. Brings up an interesting questions, though, is listing several similar mid tier items at the same time the best way to maximize value, or do they compete against each other?
