First Annual VBGF Trvia Contest

Postby vintagebrett » July 2nd, 2008, 5:17 pm

Hello Fellow Forum Members,

Welcome to the First Annual Vintage Baseball Glove Forum Trivia Contest. I thought it would be fun to come up with a couple glove related questions and have the forum members see what they can come up with. Granted, most of these questions are relatively easy to answer but a few might prove to be a little trickier. I will tell you that I only used a search engine to find one question - the rest came from books and other non-electronic resources as well as this forum.

The rules (of course, what would a contest be without rules)
1) You must answer all 10 questions correctly to win the prize
2) Answers must be sent via PM to vintagebrett
3) You may start answering the questions anytime but I will not accept any PM's with final answers until 6 pm ET on Sunday, July 6th. This will give everyone a chance to read the questions and try to answer them.
4) The first PM in my box after 6 pm ET on Sunday, July 6th, with all of the answers correct, will win the prize.

The prize this time around will be a Nokona model G11 Jelly Sorelle split finger glove (pictured below). Glove leather is soft and supple - the perfect vintage glove to go play catch with. It does have ink on the wrist strap and the end of the strap is torn, but overall, it's very nice. Glove will be shipped via USPS Priority mail to the winner at no cost to them.

I thought this would be fun to try and see how it goes. Obviously, nothing ever works perfectly the first time around so I'll take your suggestions after we are done.

Ok, here are the questions! And remember, no PMs with answers until 6 pm ET on July 6th. Have fun!

1. What make and model glove did Bill Mazeroski use for a majority of his career?
-Started with a Wilson A2054 but played most of his career with a MacGregor G119 (according to the book "The Best Game Ever").

2. What city did Victor Wright & Ditson produce their equipment in?
-Springfield, MA

3. What was one of the ideas for glove improvement Bill Doak recommended to Rawlings when first meeting with them in 1919?
-Ready made pocket
-Different webbing

4. What year did a Mickey Mantle endorsed glove, made by Rawlings, first appear?
-1954

5. What manufacturer, now famous for clothing among the teenage crowd, produced baseball gloves in the early part of the 20th century?
-Abercrombie and Fitch (although I would have accepted Mitchell and Ness as well - don't know how popular it is with the teeny boppers)

6. A flashback to your SAT days – Ristankor is to Nokona as _________ is to Sonnett.
-Se-Kur Strap

7. How much did actor Billy Crystal pay for a “game-used” Mickey Mantle glove in 1999?
-$239,000

8. What year did a rule prohibiting players from leaving their gloves on the field when at bat go into effect?
-Rule went into effect after the 1953 season.

9. Before the much loved Wilson A2000 appeared to the general public in 1958, Wilson had once before had an A2000 model (a 2 finger model!). Who was the endorser on this model?
-Phil Carvaretta - this was made in 1951 - I had one on my hand once but the guy wouldn't sell it to me.

10. What year did Joe Phillips produce his first Glove Collector Newsletter?
-First unoffical newsletter came out in December of 1989 - "official" start was 1990

And a Trivia question for you Brett

Postby softball66 » July 2nd, 2008, 7:51 pm

Brett, I'll send you a Nokona box label if you answer this one:

How did "Jelly" Sorrelle get his nickname and what college did he coach at after playing pro ball?

Joe,
I know he coached at Baylor but I'm not sure how someone with the name Boyd Sorelle, gets the nickname jelly, unless because it rhymes with his last name?

And the winner is. . .

Brett OK, you did well. I'll send you a label.
A friend of mine whom I worked with in the newspaper business and later became managing editor of the Houston Chronicle, Jack Loftis, was a backup catcher for Baylor in those days under Sorrelle. He said "Jelly" got his name because he put a "funny substance" on his ball when he pitched. Maybe our Jelly got to petroleum jelly before Gaylord.

A brief note to cowboy

Postby softball66 » July 5th, 2008, 10:53 pm

Way back in the early days of glove clecting, I thought I just about knew it all. Guess what? Guy called that he had a Marty Marion Marathon Sporting Goods glove. I told him I didn't think so, ya da, ya da. Of course, as we all know now and about many other player gloves, yes indeed ol Marty was hanging with a Marathon.
These times when I get a call from a guy saying, "well I hear you're a big glove expert." I explain that probably I know more about some gloves than anyone in my neighborhood. But a new family has moved it.
I learn something on this forum every day, from Cowboy and others who have help me immensely. I think the basic success of this hobby is that we're all willing to share knowledge and thoughs like Bob Clevenhagen, who's forgot more than I'll ever learn; Dave Bushing who comes in here to share his extensive experience in dealing in gloves. But lot of guys here have a fount of information who don't necessarily have a big reputation.
I'm just here to learn too, from Cowboy, Brett, Bret, Burker, so on, so on. Many, many more. Thank you all profusely!

Haven't received any submissions yet so I guess a) either no one was interested or b) questions were too hard. :) I'll keep the contest open if anyone still wants to play.

Brett,
I enjoy baseball trivia, but I have to tell you that this one was way out of my league! I'm not at all ashamed to admit when I'm stumped, and I sure am stumped.

one question is stumping me

When the heck did Joe Phillips begin the dadgum newsletter? I tried asking him and he doesn't remember. Cheeez.
The answer on Billy Crystal is "pocket change."

Brett, I actually had to look up three of them. Tough questions man. I figured I wouldn't participate. I'll submit if you want me to.

Ok, I guess my questions were too hard. :) Here's the new deal (i'll post the answers later for the quiz) if you'd like the glove for free. Guess how many Sonnett (OK's not included, just Sonnett) gloves I have in my collection as of this date. Post your guesses in this thread. Person closest by noon ET tomorrow (July 9th) gets the glove shipped to them free. You can't guess the same number someone else has already posted.
