DiMaggio With Outlaw Web

I know Joe has done an article on this before but I found this picture really neat. Everyone's probably seen it but me but, anyway, it shows DiMaggio holding a Rawlings glove with the rolled lace web - NEAT!

Roll out the lacing

Postby softball66 » June 22nd, 2008, 1:43 pm

Brett's right. We did a newsletter story on this fascinating bit of glove lore.
We interviewed Rawlings Designer Rollie Latina and touched on this. Doc
and Rollie were famous for telling outfielders that they would give them an
extra step in the outfield. How? By getting them into this glove or maybe altering their current glove with the "extended" rolled lace.
Ironically, Rollie said that Joe brought out the banning of this glove web because he was so upset that little Al Gionfriddo robbed him of an extra base hit in a world series game. Guess Joe gave in and got a RL of his own.
I've got a photocopy of this picture.

"On July 17,1941 third baseman Ken Keltner made two terrific back handed stops to rob Joe DiMaggio of two hits, ending the 56 game hitting streak."
I thought i had heard somewhere that the Outlawed Rolled lace glove ended the 56 game hitting streak, I think the Ken Burns Documentry made up that story ?

Keltner

Postby softball66 » June 23rd, 2008, 7:58 am

I'd sort of forgotten about Keltner's role in the DiMaggio streak. I wonder what Ken was using though. If you've seen his personal model, the KK, it's a short fingered wonder and nothing like the RR. But Lattina may have altered it with a lace web which he did on some players' gloves (the extra step). And that would be another reason DiMag wasn't too happy about the rolled lace effect. I heard that players would pull or extend the web an inch or so higher than the top of the fingers. Guess we should pull up some photos of Keltner to see what he was using at the time.
This topic has directed us into the discussion of the length of gloves, which, as we know, covers many secrets and some "not secrets."

Cooperstown!!

Postby doubleSwitch » July 12th, 2008, 11:02 pm

I just came back from my 2nd visit to Cooperstown in 2 months. A bit more crowded this time around. Anyways, This Rawlings outlawed web glove is in Joe Dimaggio's locker at the hall. I chuckled and remembered Brett's post. Also in the Negro League display there was this Modern late 1960's import glove labeled to have been used during the early to late 1940's before if was even made. With all of the artifacts the Hall of Fame has, What is on display is disapointing. New item they did bring out though was the HH Harvey Haddix glove that Willie Mays made the catch with. That was very cool to see. IMHO "Baseball As America" is alot better.

Baseball as America is a traveling display that highlights some of the items the Hall of Fame owns. I saw it at the Field Museum in Chicago a few years back it was fun.

It is said how much the Hall owns but doesn't display.
