All Made-in-Korea A2000s counterfeits per Wilson

Postby oldreliable » April 24th, 2008, 10:32 pm

Hi all,

I thought that you folks might find this interesting. Occasionally we see an A2000 on eBay which raises our hackles. These suspicious gloves almost always say Korea in the W logo on the thumb.

I emailed Wilson this question:

"Was the Wilson A2000 baseball glove ever made in Korea? Occasionally on eBay, fishy-looking A2000 gloves are put up for bid. The fishy-looking ones usually say "Wilson Korea" in the circular Wilson logo on the back of the glove by the thumb. They sometimes have Rawlings-looking features. Can you provide any insight? Thank you."

Here is the response I received:

"All Wilson gloves that say made in Korea are counterfeits. You may also notice that some words are misspelled."

OK, so that answers that.

Korean made gloves

Postby softball66 » April 25th, 2008, 7:57 am

Years, years ago when I was visiting with Jim Storey at Nocona, he told me that "we flat can't make a glove better than the Koreans." Korea is a country full of artisans in several fields and the Japanese certainly were aware of this. Ditto so were the Japanese when they put some attention to it (the country of replication - in some cases better than the originals - in many areas.
I'd heard of these fake Wilson A2s before as they pop up on occasion.
While all the talk in president race is about trade. It's also about chasing the cheapest labor dollar. Labor intensive gloves are the proof of this search for same quality lesser production cost. Glove imports started with Japan, then to Korea, then to Taiwan, then to Philippines, Malaysia, where labor hours are measured in pennies. I get an email every few months from folks in Pakistan and India about wanted to produce batting gloves for me.

I hope that my original post in this thread didn't come off as bashing products made in Korea. That was definitely not my intent.

I only wanted to say that if it says "A2000" and it says Korea on the circular W patch, then it isn't really a genuine Wilson A2000 according to Wilson.

And who is to say that these gloves were actually made in Korea? For all we know, they could have been made in Antarctica. Maybe the word "Korea" was added to boost the appearance of legitimacy. Who knows?

Thanks,

John,
