Still Playing?

Postby robin_buckeye » January 15th, 2008, 3:40 pm

Just wondering if any of you guys are still playing or if you're mostly watching/collecting.

I've been invited to join a hardball team this season (48+). Since High School I've only played softball (both slow and fast pitch), but quite a bit of that.

Also I practice with my two young sons a good deal.

I'm just wondering what, if any, experiences you here have had with adult hardball and what I might expect.

I still help out with my kids teams but thats about it. For some reason hitting really messes up my golf swing. I only have 4 gloves right now[3 HOH and 1 A2000]. The only one I never use is the Wilson. It is the glove I grew up with[birthday present in around 1975] and it's starting to rip between the first and second fingers. I can't stand to see it get any worse so it's officially retired.

I never really stopped playing, but I do a lot more umpiring these days.

Aside from one season in the early 80's, when a team I played for disbanded and I couldn't find another team, I have played some form of ball for the past 25 consecutive seasons. This has been a mix of slow pitch softball, fastpitch and adult league baseball. Many of those years I played on two or three different teams.

The past three years have been fastpitch softball only, as that is all I can squeeze in now that I umpire anywhere from 75-100 baseball and softball games each year.

Even the frigid clime of snowbound Ohio won't stop me! Just got my schedule for an indoor fastpitch league, comprised of high school players, that starts this weekend. I'll umpire about 30 games in that, then hit the fields when the high school baseball season to starts in March. From there, I'll be on some field, somewhere, at least four days a week right up through the end of fall ball in October.

I still play in an adult wood bat league. It is an open league with kids in their 20's all the way to old folks like me. Still, I have reached the point that I am not intimidated by the fire ballers and dig in to try to foul off a couple before they either walk me or retire me. My son plays 11U travel ball so you can imagine how much that has taken awy from my game. We are looking at starting a mid-week over 30 league so I may get a few more ABs this season. My goal is to improve each year so I'll be ready for the over 60 league once my son goes off to college.

Have fun and play hard!

I haven't played in six months as my team disbanded, but I've played in quite a few different decades:

50s
60s
70s
80s
90s
2000s

Haven't played catch since Sunday.....I'm a Rawlings Trapeze guy...55

Opening day today in my dinosaur league...guess I better stretch

Playing the best team in the league on the best field. I used my Musial TG 12 there for an inning at SS last season...I think I'll go with my new Spalding 1023 I picked up from RickyBulldog for the ninth inning today :D
