Most Desirable Gloves

Postby vintagebrett » April 7th, 2008, 7:44 am

With a Doak 3 finger being offered on eBay this week it got me wondering what are the most desirable gloves among collectors based on rarity, value and appearance. I've made a list below - what are your thoughts. (Sorry modern guys but I don't think anything post 1940 is going to make the list - the MMPS, XPG6s, TG12s - there are enough to go around).

Endorsed Gloves
1) Ken-Wel Lou Gehrig zipper back
2) Stall and Dean Ty Cobb
3) D&M white Babe Ruth model G41
4) Sholess Joe Jackson - any model except maybe the Nokona 1B mitt
5) Rawlings 3 Finger Bill Doak

Non-Endorsed Gloves
1) Fingerless workman
2) Workman
3) Early ambidexterous
4) Duck web
5) Tornado palm

List

Brett, I think your list is right on. I agree with Endorsed 1-4 in that order but I never considered a Doak 3 one of the most desirable. What is your rationale on that? I'm not complaining as I have one. Just curious I guess. I always thought #5 would be a double patch Ken Wel Dazzy or a double patch Rawlings Doak Original. I would even put a Matty or a Wagner above a Doak 3 for my personal top five.

For my non-endorsed top list, I can't stop at five. I would go:

1. Fingerless
2. Finger Tipped
3. Workman's
4. Webless
5. Pita
6 Duck Web
7. Ambidextrous
8. Tornado Palm
9. Fielders Mitt
10. Crescent

The reason I put the Doak on is because it is rarer than the Ken-Wel Vance and it is a Lutze style three finger - the prices for those keep going up and up and I figured out of all of them, this one would probably be high priority for collectors. I could see Matthewson on that list - those don't come around too often.
