This Upsets Me to No End

Postby Centerfield » April 3rd, 2008, 10:12 am

I saw a MEARS certificate on eBay which had a mistake, but was going to let it pass as not to appear to be rekindling an old debate. But after seeing Sotheby's make the same mistake, I have to bring it up because Stall & Dean holds a special place with me. PLEASE... get the damn spelling correct... it is not Stahl ! ! ! ! A leading authenticator and a top auction house should know better, it's just pitiful. And while I'm venting, why does a store model glove need an authentication certificate, anyway?

C'mon, you got to cut these big auction houses some slack - how would they ever be able to afford a proof reader with a measely 20% buyers premium.

And it's not like it's written on the side of the cup or anything!

Check put those prices in the Sotheby's auction.
Looks like someome had their finger stuck on
the 5000 - 7000 button. it would be interesting to see if alot of these lots
even sell.

The funny thing about the glove is that the seller advises it includes a letter of authenticity. However, the Mears letter advises that it is a store model glove and not available during Wagner's playing days (presumably this was submitted as a Hans Wagner game model).

Spelling or not, that Cobb Cup is beautiful.

Stahled Out

Once, back in the dark ages of glove collecting, I interviewed Dick Stahl..err..Dick Stall Jr. He followed up sending me a photo of a workman style glove that his father or grandfather had owned. He also sent me a photocopy of I think a 1911 Stall and Dean catalog which I still have. He told me a story about the first import days in the 1950s when an interesting Japanese party came over to his plant and took photos of the operation, in order, Dick supposed, to help S&D with manufacturing. The Japanese fellows never got back and began manufacturing of gloves on their own. I think Stall and Dean might have still been selling uniforms when I talked to Dick.

Spelling

Postby ebbets55 » April 8th, 2008, 12:19 am

Centerfield, I'm with you. I can't stand misspelled glove manufacturers. You should see all the red pen marks on my computer screen. I hack it up everytime I see Spaulding, Ken Well and Stahl & Dean and don't get me started on Nocona.

Nocona is the name of a town in Texas. Since you can't copyright or trademark the name of a city or town, the name on the gloves is Nokona with a K.

Sorry, you guys know I'm the anal accountant type. Nothing personal, just trying to set the record straight.
