Vintage battered discolored baseball glove

Postby romanobooogardo » February 23rd, 2008, 12:33 am

I bought this glove for $5, was immediately offered $25, but that's not really the point.
i have cleaned the glove and there appears a signature (impressed into the leather)

The last letters in the first name are 'rton'.
The letters in the last name are 'Huckies'.
I now feel as though i am on a mission to identify this individual since the Hall of Fame lists do not contain his name, nor do several glove experts recall such a name.
The glove has had considerable wear and i believe love of the game is the reason.
I would love to identify this individual but i have been unsuccessful and wonder if anyone can help?
This is not about greed but about respect for whoever's name appears on the glove.

How about "Burton Hickles"?

It took some digging through my glove guides to find him listed as an endorser of a glove issued by the "Midwest" company. The only thing I could find about "Midwest" is that they apparently were based in Milwaukee.

That's not much to go on, but it's more than I've been able to find out about Mr. Hickles! He doesn't appear in the database as of players that ever appeared in a MLB game. Possibly he was a minor leaguer.

I also found a "Gordon Hinkle" who had a cup of coffee with Boston in 1934. That's a close match on the name and anothe possibility to consider.

Undoubtedly a very rare endorsement from a rare company- and still a bit of a mystery! Maybe some more information will surface.

Found this through Google- looks like you're not the only person to have trouble identifying a Burton Hickles glove!

(The thread at this link even features a post from our one-and-only Vintagebrett!)
