Interesting Auction...

Postby kenyon » February 21st, 2008, 1:54 pm

I've been watching ebay auction 290207537575 for a few days and just noticed the seller revised his starting bid amount and BIN price with a little over a day remaining in this auction. Starting bid amount went from $3,000 to $8,000 and the BIN went from $5,000 to $10,000. Don't get me wrong, I find nothing wrong with revising starting bids, BIN prices, but this is yet another example of a seller auctioning a large quantity of gloves and getting anxious towards the end of the auction.

Plus, that's alot of money to bid on basically site unseen gloves. For all we know, this could be the largest collection of softball gloves out there.

Seems like a strange selling strategy if you're really interested in selling the gloves. If the $5000 BIN didn't get a bite, why would a $10,000 BIN?

Why not provide a list of the individual gloves and condition. Sure, that's a little work, but you should expect to do a little work to earn that kind of money.

How about some photos of the more notable gloves in the collection?

Gloves from "the earliest days of baseball"? Then you must have some fingerless gloves, workman gloves and cresent pads in there (though I somehow doubt it).

No shipping, local pick-up only? Okay, we get that these might be expensive to ship. Why not box them up (in several boxes) and charge what it costs? UPS will ship boxes up to 150 lbs. Not offering shipping GREATLY reduces your potential customers.

The seller seems to have designed a sales strategy specifically designed to NOT get these gloves sold! And maybe that's exactly his plan.

I'm imagining a conversation something like this...

Wife: "These darn gloves are filling up our extra closet! I need a place for my good linen, all the kids toys and my Hummel figure collection! Plus, we won't have room for my mother's suitcases when she visits next month!"

Hubby: "But, but, but, these are my... precious gloves! I've spent years collecting these rare beauties. Some are from the earliest days of baseball!"

Wife: "I don't care. They're taking up all our room and they smell funny, too! I want them OUT!"

Hubby: "But, dear..."

Wife: "Either those disgusting gloves go or I go!"

Hubby: (Thinking it over...) "Yes, dear. Anything you say, dear. I promise to put them on ebay tomorrow. But if they don't sell, I guess we're just stuck with them..."

I had asked for a more detailed list of items and told him I would pay shipping costs but never heard back.

I had emailed a couple of times since its about a 12 hour drive. No answer to anything. Very weird. Why waste the money to list something like that if you can't bother to answer even a question. If you see the other items for sale, they are all huge lots.
