Card Fun

Postby softball66 » November 29th, 2007, 6:19 pm

I know you glovers will enjoy this post. It sort of combines the gamer glove with some photo matching on gloves and ironically to see if players were sticking with their endorsed company as far as wearing their sponsor gloves. These shots were taken from Baseball Legends cards. And look like they were taken in Spring Training with their new gloves on hand (waist up shots or closer). Lots of baseball card show this sort of glove shots but Legends pictures look like photos made for the glove companies.
Here goes:
Catfish Hunter, Wilson A2000
Pee Wee Reese, Rawlings - looks like MC
Burt Hooten, Rawlings (streamline fingers)
Rollie Fingers, Rawlings fastback
Gary Peters, Spalding
Hoyt Wilhelm, Rawlings, open back
Ralph Terry, Spalding Tra Pocket
Virgil Trucks, Wilson
Warren Spahn, Rawlings XPG3
Milt Pappas, Wilson A2000 open Bar web
Sal Maglie, Spalding
Dennis Leonard, Wilson A2 closed web
Don Larsen, Rawlings XPG3
Joel Horlen, Spalding
Bob Feller, whew what a beater split finger bar web
Clete Boyer, Rawlings
Jim Bunning, Spalding closed back
Pappas, Hooten, had their marker names and Leonard his uni # marked on their gloves.
Nearly all pictuers showed only the back of the gloves.

Funny you mention this. I keep this Dave Stieb card near my A2000 collection and often thought it was more of a Wilson advertisment than a typical player card.

Great post Joe. As a kid, when I opened a pack of ball cards the glove was the first thing I looked for in the picture. Liked the "glove" shots much better than the "batting" cards.

Glad you guys are enjoying the cards v. gloves. I too look at cards now to see what the players are wearing for their pose. Besides Corbis, a good way to match up players with their gamer gloves.
Here's part Deux of some smattering of cards:
Ozzie Smith, his trapeze Rawlings
Bobby Shantz, BIG Rawlings glove for the little guy, XPG3?
Dave Johnson, Rawlings
Larry Doby, Rolled Lace Rawlings Red Rolfe
Dixie Howell, c mitt with an L ...T patch?
Yog, a rolled lace webbing c. mitt
Roy Campanell, another rolled lace webbing mitt
Jim Kaat, Wilson
Wilbur Wood, Wilson
Jim Piersall, Wilson
Bob Turley, Rawlings
Monte Irvin, Rawlings MC?
Bob Gibson, Rawlings
Nolan Ryan, Rawlings PRO 2BF
Ed Lopat, Wilson
Nellie Fox, Wilson
Elroy Face, either a Nokona or a Wilson

From the Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association I have a list of the endorsers for which company listings for 1961 and '63, maybe on in the '70s if glovers are interested in finding out maybe their favorite player's endorsement for those years, they can email me at glovecollector@tx.rr.com

My brother still collects baseball cards and gave me this one from Series 3 of 2007 Topps - I thought it was neat

I know someone here does some work with the Padres - if you come across the player in the picture, see if he actually collects old gloves or if Topps furnished him with it for the shoot.

How about this one: Hornsby with his 3-finger Bee-Sting glove! I guess those guys really used those freakish gloves.
