Sometimes the small auction houses yield some bargains. A 1958 & 1962 Wilson model A2000 gloves sold for $32.

A 1930's Stall & Dean mitt sold for $12.

A circa 1940 Wilson Luke Swell model 501X mitt sold for $3.

A group of mitts I missed from a previous auction. 2 Wilson models, 2 Spalding, a Victor Wright & Ditson and a Victor model. One of the Spalding models has a Knights of Columbus tag. The Victor mitt, lower right looks to be in fantastic condition. The lot sold for $584.

A D&M Lutzke model G75 glove sold for $275.

A 1960's Spalding Roger Maris model 42-397 MVP glove with picture box sold for $1950.

A 1954-55 Rawlings Mickey Mantle model MM glove sold for $150. First year Rawlings Mantle model. It's in decent shape.

1964 Ken Boyer PM model XPG8 glove sold for $189. Not a model often seen.

A 1960's Rawlings Clete Boyer model TT15 glove sold for $179. It's in nice condition.

A circa 1950 Rawlings Red Rolfe model RR glove. It is stamped Satchell Paige front and back. No provenance at all but still sold for $760.

A circa 1910 Spalding catchers mitt sold for $10. From a small auction site. Nice looking mitt with the patented wrist reinforcement.

That has to be a record for a store model RR in that condition. lol.

The RR was a 7 day auction. Plenty of time for a bidder to come to their senses, but no.
A 1950's Rawlings Stan Musial model PM Supreme glove sold for $25. This was a BIN. A nice looking glove.

A 1960 Rawlings Mickey Mantle model MMP glove sold for $219. Unfortunately completely relaced but otherwise the glove's in great shape. The least they could have done was to use period correct lacing and not that thick modern lace. It is possible to find thinner period correct lace if you look around a bit. Just compare the lacing on this one with the PM Supreme above.

I agree that the heavy modern lace looks completely out of place on a vintage glove. I have spent considerable time trying to find thinner more period correct lace but have only been able to locate a couple of sources where you can special order lace. Unfortunately I've also found you need to order it in large bulk quantities. What I have been using for several years now is an inexpensive leather skiving tool (like the one pictured) that can be picked up off Amazon for around $60.00. While not exactly what I would call a quality made piece of equipment, I have found it works perfectly to shave a modern piece of lace down to the desired thickness. Looking at older gloves I can see evidence that the factory also used this technique when assembling a glove. While a chrome or alum tanned lace has a brown backing a skived lace (depending on how much it has been shaved) will often exhibit a yellow or a light tan backing. I most recently used this method to relace the Wilson Early Wynn PM glove that you pictured in the March glove of the month section. The results are much better in both appearance and feel than if I was to use an unmodified modern lace.

My last post and this post should probably be located in the glove conditionig and restoration category but they are both in reply to Mikes post ahead of them regarding relacing vintage gloves with thicker modern lace. Below are two pictures from JD's website of mid fifties Rawlings gloves that clearly show skived lace being used from the factory. Note the yellow or almost white appearance on the back of the lace.

That's good information Derek. The Amazon tool is nice. Also, great job on the gloves. You have the best collection of 50-60's gloves around!
A 1961 Wilson A2000 glove sold for $1000. The glove is a one year only model with the Rawlings style "Edge-U-Cated Heel". The outside finger loop is pretty cool. The glove is well played but still in excellent shape. The price seems more geared to a NM-NOS example.

A rare one sold on ebay for $145. It's a pristine white leather Bon Tober mitt. The tag and logo button are awesome.

A 1960's MacGregor Hank Aaron model GF20 glove sold for $69. The glove is really nice, kind of a bargain.

A circa 1890 fingerless glove sold for $7876. It's in great shape. A well built all leather model. The sewn padding on the front has a unique design in the way it follows the shortened finger stalls. Nothing like it in JD's gallery.

A 1960's Rawlings Stann Musial model TT10 glove sold for $477. A TOTL model in excellent condition.

A 1950's Rawlings Harvey Haddix model HH glove sold for $150. A TOTL glove in decent condition. A collector favorite due to it's use by many MLB players BITD.

A 1958 Rawlings Herb Score model HSP glove sol for $300. Some play wear but basically unimprovable. A stunning TOTL glove..

A circa 1970 Rawlings DB7 mitt sold for $75. A TOTL HOH double break model in decent condition.

Another fingerless glove sold on ebay This one is a Spalding "Amateur" model. It was a newly patented design in 1890 that simplified the construction of throwing gloves for catchers. The glove has some wear an tear and a repair. It solad for $4897.

A circa 1970 wilson Catfish Hunter model 2005 glove sold for $150. It's in super condition.

A circa 1968 Sonnett Norm Cash model HI 675 mitt sold for $80. Features the HI-LI web, a phonetic play on the sport of Jaa-alai. This is a rare one in super condition.

A 1950's Rawlings Stan Musial model PMM glove with picture box sold for $325. Most of the money is in the box.

A 1950's Rawlings Bob Dillinger model BD glove sold for $119. The glove is in great condition.

A 1940's Marathon Joe Gordon model 4207 glove sold for $50. There are two Gordon models, the 4205 and the 4207. This all leather version is the only model worth collecting. It looks to be in nice condition.

A 1930's D&M Earl Smith model 732 mitt sold for $79. A pretty rare model in good condition.

An interesting glove from a small auction house sold for $275. It's a Spalding model 90-9 glove with signatures from the 1940 Chicago Cubs team. The glove is pretty cool and joins the list of other non-catalogued circa 1940 sewn web gloves from Spalding.
