2012 National Sports Collectors Convention

Postby vintagebrett » January 3rd, 2012, 4:41 pm

Once again the convention returns to Baltimore this summer, the first week in August. We had such a great time in 2010 in Baltimore that I'm super excited for August to get here! Alas, there is no Orioles game this year but I'd still like to see if we can do something as a glove collecting group. We'll be set up again but this year our booth will be double in size - we are sharing with Corey Leiby from the Antique Athlete so there is sure to be tons of great items to look at and purchase. If you come, I know you'll all stop by the booth but it's hard to have a good conversation with the amount of traffic. My initial thought it is to rent a room at a restaurant or nearby hotel (nothing fancy) where we can all get together and have some fun eating and sharing glove stories. I'd like to get some feedback from the group here and see what your thoughts are. Thursday night would probably be the best choice but we'll see what everyone has to say. If you've never been to a National and are thinking about going, I highly recommend making the trip. Baltimore, to me, is the best location as there are many restaurants and hotels within walking distance, plus the Inner Harbor to enjoy. There are many family friendly attractions as well if you want to bring the whole family.

Maybe I am a little bit too excited about this, but I just purchased three days worth of National tix for myself, my Dad, and my brother. I figured I'd refresh this thread to see if anyone else had interest in what Brett proposed regarding a get together outside of the show to chat, buy, sell, trade, etc., etc. We're in for meeting up and look forward to doing so...we'll be bringing along some gloves, bats, balls, etc. that we've been accumualting all year as barter material for the show. Some pretty good stuff if I do say so myself....so, we sure hope that we can link up with members of the forum who will be there. See you at THE BOOTH!

I did some initial checking around a couple months ago. I didn't pursue it any further because no one replied to the thread so I wasn't sure how much interest there was for a get together. One of the places I inquired into was Fogo De Chao - it's a Brazilian Steakhouse, all you can eat for $48. They said we could have a private or semi-private room at no extra cost. Thought that was a pretty decent deal. It's right near the convention center as well which is a bonus. I'm open to suggestions though. Best bet would probably be Thursday night.

We are less than 2 months away from the National. Didn't hear from too many people that were going so there is not going to be a formal get together but feel free to use our booth as a resting pad/gathering place if you are attending. William and I are in the planning stages of figuring out how we want the booth set up this year - it's our hope that it will be the most vintage looking one there.

The Popovich family will be attending and we are all looking forward to spending some time in and around the booth...we'll have some books available for those wishing to check them out/purchase. In addition, we'll be brigning along some trade fodder and hope to make a deal or two while there. If anyone is interested in hearing (seeing pics) more about what we plan on taking, please feel free to let us know.

You can reach out to me thru our website.... www.dugouttreasures.com ...or email direct at...jayz43_1b@yahoo.com

See you in Baltimore!

About two weeks to go until the show. We will have about 200 gloves in the booth plus lots of other items like bats, trophies, photos, baseballs, advertising and more. The gloves span all eras from the turn of the 20th century up into the 1970's - something for every budget. In addition we will have the stylish Ken-Wel caps and the Dugout Treasures book. William and I pride ourselves on digging deep to bring items to the market. Speaking for my own inventory, less than 5% of the items came from eBay - most have been found at shows, local auctions or picked from local collections, etc. We are not packing a museum like some dealers at the show, our merchandise is for sale at reasonable prices and the less we have to pack on Sunday, the happier we will be. If you need a place to relax during the show, pull up a chair in our booth and rest. Bring William and my brother a beer and they're sure to give you a better deal on my merchandise. This year we are occupying booths 2053/2152. Our design team has been working hard to make our booth vintage, just like the items we sell - our own Green Monster will be making its debut this year. The show is always a blast - if you're on the fence about going, just do it! Even if you don't buy anything, it's fun to walk around and meet fellow collectors. Based on tweets from the National, they've sold more presale tickets than ever before and have numerous press requests from all the major news outlets. I'm sure a lot has to do with that card find in Ohio but, the more people, the better chance we have to grow our hobby.

This is looking to be the best grouping of items we've offered to date, without a doubt. One of the things that we're always searching for are items that will appeal to a wide range of collectors. We want the card collectors, the autograph guys, etc, to come into our booth and get excited about vintage equipment. I think we were really successful with that last year and we hope to build on that again. Whether you're looking to fill a hole in your collection or just a spot on your shelf or wall, we've got something for you.

Sounds great guys...really looking forward to visiting with you (and everyone else) at the booth. We'll be there on Wednesday the 1st and will drop by the booth that evening to leave off the books. I'm very excited about this year's show and will be bringing along my Dad, brother, and my 4 year old son. In addition, we'll have a few items that we'd like to use as trade material and hope to come home with a few new additions for the collection.

I'll be set up with Chris and Herbert as normal. We're going to have a ton of bats like always and looks like we are going to have a bunch of gloves too. We will also have some killer football helmets, some unis and a little bit of everything else. We're booths 2549,2553,2648 and 2652..Hope to see everyone there.

Also want to mention that longtime dealer and all around nice guy, Pat Armstrong has a booth near ours - he always has a nice selection of gloves. Over the years I've bought a few nice OK and Sonnett gloves from him for very fair prices.

Lots of great options where to spend your money this year - start at our booth first though. 8)

One week until the show opens! I'm packed and ready to roll. Only thing left to do is decide on our road trip music - William is still hung up in his Rick Astley phase but I'm pushing the Air Supply hard this time. 8)

Heard that there is going to be a booth with 500 gloves at the show! Our 200 pales in comparison but it should be a glove collectors dream - get to the show if you can!
