Manlte glove hang tag

Postby softball66 » August 22nd, 2011, 2:56 pm

Mantle document expert tipped me off to this one. An apparent bogus Rawlings Mantle Glove Hang Tag. Notice Mantle signature in the photo is his most recent while the one printed below is his original
which was on the store display that these images were copied from and evidently signed by Mantle hence the signature across his picture.

Rawlings never produced that style hang tag. Unfortunately they've been on and off eBay for at least five years, maybe longer.

From a graphic design standpoint, there's a lot of weirdness going on there. It doesn't even look like it could be right.

The original Rawlings Mantle advertisement from which these fake hang tags were produced will be in REA next week. The new style signature is Mick's autograph on the poster. Some great glove stuff to look forward to! Large glove manufacturing advertisements, countertop displays, boxes and a HoFer glove endorsement contract. Should be fun!

Kudos for catching this. Another big tipoff on the "hang tag" is that the inside is blank. Why would Rawlings have wasted the inside where copy could have been placed? New signature. And there's always distortion from reprinting even though reducing down from poster size makes it cleaner. On original tags from the 1950s, I'm not sure dot patterns would show up from lupe.
Good catch Jerry Looking forward to REA sales on these.

Even the original looks odd, thankfully there's another Mantle ad piece that's stunning (though restoration has been done to it).

If you own a Wilson Hornsby, there are two lots for you. Magnificent accompanying pieces!
