I felt pretty fortunate to win the the Ken-Wel Dazzy Vance glove (ended Sept.11 evening). What caught my eye was what looked to me to be a Gloversville, NY cloth label which I'm pretty sure means it's older than the Utica NY labeled ones. I should be receiving it today or tomorrow. I'll post pics when I have it cleaned up.

I watched that Dazzy Vance model go out of my price range, which I knew that it would. I thing the winning price is a good price considering it looks to be in nice shape and has that Gloversville patch. Being made in Gloversville means that it was made prior to the 1928 move to New Hartford/Utica. I feel better knowing it went to a good home.

Not necessarily true. The Gloversville patch has turned up on models cataloged after the move. Appears as if the company depleted their stock of old patches before sewing on the Utica patches with the newer logo. Just quibbling over semantics, but it could be from 1929 or even 1930.

Thanks for the information. I had a feeling there was a qualifier in there somewhere. Anyway, I received the Dazzy Vance this afternoon in the mail and to my mind it's just great and also is in fact an early version of this model. It has a nice perfect lining. It's very soft horsehide inside and out, all the seams are tight, no writing and two complete labels. The seller talked about the finger lace being original, which I think is true. It's interesting the way the player using the glove doubled back with the lace and wove it through the fingers I guess to make it stronger and keep the pocket the way he wanted it. Up close I can make out the Dazzy Vance endorsement and above it the model # 560. I'm a happy camper.

I have heard also that Ken-Wel had a surplus of Gloversville labels that were sewn on Utica made gloves, so the label alone is not indicative of where the glove was assembled. Thanks, Mr. Mitt for pointing out what I failed to.

I just wish we knew when the supply ran out! 1928, 1929, 1930... close enough for our purposes.

I would think that the answer lies in the materials used as much as the label. The last 560 I owned was made of much thicker almost blond colored leather. It had the Utica label and just felt like a 30's glove as opposed to a late 20's glove. The Source Book's first listing for the Vance glove is 1928. When were they actually first made?

I'm still waiting for one of these to surface. Notice the early "Peaked" gussets on the illustration of the Vance model. The model 560 Vance glove from above has the later "diagonal" gussets. This ad is from 1926. A find of a "Peaked" gusset Vance glove would rock a lot of people's worlds.
