Long Beach Flea April 19th 2009

Postby Rickybulldog » April 18th, 2009, 2:30 pm

Wasn't sure where to post this.

SOCAL glovers,

I'll be at the Long Beach Flea in SoCal tomorrow if anyone wants to hook up and share their finds for the day. After, I'll probably shoot over to Rob Mucha's house for a quick visit. Rob should be at the show. I'll probably be out there from 7:30-10:00. If not sure how to locate me, I'll be near the entrance at 8:30ish. I'll be the brown guy with the white/green Hurley hat. :D

Frank the ninja? JD? others?

If you've never been, it's at the long beach veteran stadium. Should be a nice day...................................RBD

Do you mean in the morning? I haven't been in many years but after your last month's finds... Sounds like fun. Maybe I'll see you there. Gate at 8:30 if I make it.

What a wonderful day! I got to the LB flea at 7:15 a.m and did my usual rounds. Right off the bat I found a leather football helmet for a decent price. Wasn't interested in it, but picked it up for my friend Rob Mucha. Later I found a Rawlings book and a Spalding oil tin. Although not much on the baseball side, it was fun because I spotted JD and we talked briefly about the morning. Apparently, he had seen the Leather football helmet before I did and told Rob about it and Rob was in the other rows looking for it. Hilarious! Anyway, I started walking with JD, but he seemed like a man on a mission so I let him go and promised to meet up with him at 8:30. Jim, I thought I walked fast through the aisles but you my friend take the cake! Later at 8:30, we met up and showed off our treasures. Rob left with a car full of goodies and JD walked away with the oldest baseball item! :D I did get to meet John Kanuit and Jim Griffith for the first time and the "ninja" slipped by again. Guys let's do it again! Next time JD, we'll have breakfast at Denny's.

Great recap Ricky. Good seeing you today. I was a man on a mission - to not get completely blanked, yet again, as I always do. Little did I know I would end up with the GEM of day, a youth model, Japanese Mickey Mantle GJ99. For those who don't know what this beauty looks like, picture a 1980's orange vinyl Ricky Henderson glove. Same thing. I think I'll take this momentum with me next month.

Next time, bacon and eggs for sure.

I get a call that Ricky's coming to the area and wants to meet me at the LBC, which is cool because last month he didn't even waive as he drove right past my house. It's also pretty neat that he wanted me to meet him there. Usually collectors keep it on the down-low and hope that everyone else forgets it's that weekend (not really but sort of). I had to go. There's one of these every Sunday at a different location and these days I don't go very often at all. You see, I like to sleep in a little on Sunday and there are so many pickers in the area -- who normally beat me to the good stuff -- that I've gotten a little lazy in my older age. I wake in time and do the normal debate with myself about the virtues of sleeping-in but drag myself out. I'm glad I did.

Did I mention that I usually get shot down at these things? Anyway, I'm about half way down my first row and I see a great football pennant with image of a player wearing a flat-top helmet (exactly what I needed for my new football display (have gloves will trade)). The price was right, too, but not dirt cheap or anything. I actually passed on an older Angels pennant that normally I would have bought just to not get shut out but it just seemed like today was going to be different.

Run into John Kanuit which was a little surprising because he hadn't been out locally for a while. I think he's connected to like all but three sellers there who hold stuff back for him so I'm thinking that I'm done finding anything else ... ever. A couple rows later and I'm also carrying a Norm Van Brocklin Spalding football in box (from the direction John came). It's not that you can't find these things on ebay but there is just something better about finding it on the hunt. Shortly after, run into the Ninja and as expected he had seen my football pennant a while back, but wait ... he hadn't seen the football in box (a first?). For some weird reason I start liking the football in box even more.

Run into Jim and he tells me that others may be meeting at 8:30AM to go over to my house (glove forum invite). Of course all are welcome, but called the wife to give her a heads-up (you married guys will understand). Jim tells me about the football helmet and we head back that way, although I have my doubts it will still be here with the ninja, Kanuit, and Ricky on the prowl (and not necessarily in that order).

On the way we take a quick detour to get Jim's opinion on a pricey collared wool baseball top. We have the seller take it out of the frame to get a better look and then see that this thing is tiny. We pass on that one, but of course someone out of the blue just happens to drop by to show me a cool old baseball picture he picked up. Uh oh, I'm thinking my luck is back to normal ... my optimism on the football helmet is low. At that point Jim comments about never finding anything at Long Beach anymore and it hits me that we are looking together, which has historically been uh, how to word it, eventful. My hands are full and he's hungry ... I start getting nervous that I'll be heisman'd if we both see something great at the same time. We split up.

I end up taking three trips to my car to drop stuff off (I never need one darn trip to the car normaly). A huge framed Dimaggio photo and another photo, three mannequin torsos, eight large wooden spools (for helmet displays), and I even passed on some other things. But no football helmet.

That is until I finally run into Ricky. He hands me the helmet and says he picked it up for me. There was a lot cool about today, but having him know that I'd love the helmet, front the money, and then not blackmail me for it (which he could have) was the best. Thanks man!

No problem buddy. It's always fun to pick up things for your friends and see their reaction. Also, I thought I saw a reply from number9 about the carpool buddy(mannequin)? I was going to say that I can feel Rob's pain by doing the walk of shame to the parking lot with those damn things! Everybody has their one liners and cat calls. They're still cool to have though.

Here is a pic of the 4 horsemen minus the ninja.

I had two of those darn mannequins in the front seat as well. When carrying the last one to my car a collector "friend" joked that I was going to use it for more than display purposes. Of course, my take on anyone who has such thoughts is that it isn't the ink spots on the Rorshack test cards ... it's how you interpret them.

Forgot to mention that I was afraid to bring all the stuff into the house until after my wife went out on errands. I probably would have gotten away with it had one of my collector "friends" (a different one) suggested to her to look in the car ... not in those exact words but pretty close in married words. Good thing this collector "friend" picked up a football helmet for me earlier in the day or he would have gotten the look (he may have anyway).

Ricky, I deleted my post when I realized that Uncle Bernie was strapped into Rob's car, not yours. The timing was bumped by Rob's post. C'est la vie.

I thought your mannequin post was funny. I did get a lot of weird looks walking through the flea market, and the MAIN reason why Ricky took the picture of the inside of my car is that he thought the mannequin looked funny (look how prominent it is in the photo). Following his lead I took a similar photo but you can't see the mannequin in mine. Rob

Hey Ricky, I think you almost captured the elusive ninja in the second flea market photo (the one below the Tarzan poster photo). Right at the last moment I think he saw your shadow, though, and almost made it completely out of the frame. Or was he in fact the shadowed mystery man? Do me a favor and post my version of the picture of the car so people can see the real Ricky Anderson.

All joking aside, what is the going rate for those mannequins out in CA? I'd like to pick up two for some jerseys I own. I'll add them to my shopping list at Brimfield.

Are you sure you want it to display jerseys? Sorry, but I had to put up with it all day and you sort of walked into it (I am just a product of my environment). Mannequins are usually expensive out here. I don't look for them very often -- really -- like over $50 I think, but these were $10 per. The seller offered me another three for $20 more but how many mannequins does a guy really need? By the way, Ricky special ordered his mannequins and they have very life-like colored eyes. I think I may have a couple extra hollow plastic ones that shouldn't be too bulky to ship.

Rob,
I don't think I was able to get footage of our ninja Frank, but I did sift through some of the photos you sent me and I think we may have a break. I think we are dealing with a highly-skilled collector with the moves and reflexes of a jungle cat!!!!!

Yeah number 9 I thought your post was great. I only mentioned it because I thought I was going crazy because it was briefly there. Did you omit it yourself? If so, how is that possible?

And for the mannequins, yes I won them full size on ebay. I think I paid 115 including shipping for the pair. They're not too bad price wise, but you gotta look. 150-100 for full. 100-75 for headless. 50 or less for torso.
That's what I see swap meet wise.

You're right Ricky I think we may have finally captured "Frank" in the background of the latest group photo. We need to see if we can get the authorities to do a retinal or facial geometry scan to see if we can obtain the true identity of this mystery collector. By the way, in the picture you seem pretty excited about your Spalding tin pickup. Let me know if you need any others.

And thanks for adding my version of the car photo (not that anyone needed any more pictures of my stuff). As you can see from exhibit One Mr. Bulldog went out of his way to include the mannequin unnecessarily as evidenced by exhibit Two. It is clear to me that Mr. Bulldog's intent was to bring ridicule to Mr. GloveCrazy.

Forgot to mention that Jim probably had the best deal of the day, and it was pretty late in terms of finding stuff. He picked up both a large 20s buckleback catchers mitt and 1" web in the same deal. Lucky dog.
