I picked up a great quality American Eagle 7024 Warren Spahn recently and was wondering if anyone knew more about this brand. I would assume it was available through the Spiegle catalog as there's a tiny Spiegle stamping on the heel. Has some incredible lacing across the back of the fingers. I'll work on pics. I have a couple of the American Eagle/Spiegle gloves, including a Warren Spahn endorsed model that sounds like it is the same one you have. The lacing runs down the backside between the fingers, with three crossing "X's" in the space between each finger.

One other one I picked up at an antique mall this summer is a smallish "Hoot" Evers endorsed glove. This one has vinyl trim and is not as high-quality as the Spahn model. But it cleaned up nicely and and looks pretty good- and has a cool endorsement!

I have never seen this information published anywhere, but I am convinced that these gloves were made by Hutch. Nearly every AE glove I have ever seen is endorsed by a known Hutch glove endorser. Several I have seen are 100% identical to Hutch models. That is the case with the "Hoot" Evers glove I mentioned. I have seen this identical model sold with all Hutch stampings and labels.

Thanks for your help! I wonder if Hutch used this lace pattern on any others? The triple X lacing might be overkill, but it sure is a looker

Personally, the Spahn glove is the only one I've ever seen with this unique lacing. Some of the other Hutch gloves from that era had unusual finger lacing across the back of the fingers, but not quite to this extreme.

Picked up a Bucky Walters split online with only a rough picture to go by. Very nice buckle back with a smooth, flawless lining. wiped off the dusty palm to discover I've acquired another American Eagle glove! I know I should own JPs player guide, but can anyone tell me what brands Walters endorsed? -Thanks (again) in advance, Mark

Mark, the Bucky Walters glove I have is on the J.C. Higgins brand (Sears). Our glove finder book shows Walters listed in both Hutch and Spalding catalogs as well as the Higgins being found.

That info certainly would back up Bretman's theory of Hutch producing the American Eagle gloves. Walter's best years were in Cinncinati too. Perhaps the American Eagle was considered Hutch's top of the line...their Pro Preferred ....nice thought anyway. Thanks guys!

My best guess- and it's just a guess, since I have never seen this documented anywhere- is that Hutch produced these gloves under contract to Spiegle under a "private label" agreement.

Same deal as Wilson making J.C. Higgins gloves for Sears or Rawlings making gloves for Montgomery Ward.

I always thought Bucky Harris gloves almost always came up Ken Wel. I don't recall seeing him on other brands. I have one in the sale section and some in the Ken Wel section of my site. Thanks Joe for pointing out the Higgins and the Spalding models.

Also, Dave Cunningham just picked up an American Eagle glove he posted in the Other Manufacturers gallery.

Hi Guys, That American Eagle Spahn glove is Cool!! The front view of the glove has the looks of the pre-war glove, but then you flip it over and it is laces gone wild!!

Hard to believe it's been almost a year since this thread first appeared, as I remember it well. In that past year I can recall seeing perhaps three or four of these Spahn model gloves for sale.

One of these just ended on eBay. Sold for $64, a little bit cheaper than some of the others I've seen. Here's a link:

I posted pictures of the one I have back awhile ago in the "Glove Pictures" section. Interestingly, the one I have seems to be a slightly different variation. While the shell, lacing and web are identical, mine does not have the "ristankor/snugger" strap in the wristband and the AE patch is located in a different spot. The patch is also placed horizontally, not vertically like the one posted here.

Also in the past year, I have seen a couple more American Eagle gloves that were identical to other Hutch models.

That's a cool glove - I've wondered what one might look like in person, as I have a Spiegel Catalog with an American Eagle Bucky Walters glove listed (and pictured, in B/W).
