Exciting Sonnett / OK MFG Information!

Postby vintagebrett » August 18th, 2008, 3:21 pm

This is exciting for me (maybe not for the rest of you). One of the things I've been trying to identify in my research is when the names on the gloves switched from OK to Sonnett. Based on the ads and the article below, I'm going to say that 1949 was the first year of the mass marketed Sonnett Craft Built gloves. The ads and article are from mid to late 1948 and I figure they would roll the new line out the following year. The Doerr ad is also exciting because he says that he uses the product while playing. Now, I'm not too naive to believe everything an athlete who is getting paid to endorse something says, but this is the closest evidence I've come across to a Major League player using a Sonnett / OK glove.

Brett, great pickup of info. Couple of things.
Have you noticed how Bobby Doerr winds up on being with several different brands and his name on good gloves: the MacGregor Goldsmith, the Globe,
and endorser spokesman for O.K. Pretty quiet spoken guy in the shadow of Ted Williams.
Also, shown in the news picture is W. Lamar Young. I met the O.K. Rep's son, Lamar Young Jr., and did some work for their company in the 1980s. Good people.

These ads are so classic that they're miraculous! Wonderful! I love this kind of stuff.
