Dating a Nokona BM-76

Postby Bubdoggy » June 27th, 2008, 8:50 am

Probably softball66 (Joe) could help me here but I picked up a Nokona BM-76 and am trying to gauge a date range for it. It has the black Nokona label and the outline of Texas with a star where Nocona is located and BM-76 in the palm.

Guessing it's from the 80's?

Nocona tag dating, etc.

Postby softball66 » July 20th, 2008, 3:21 pm

This may help a little with the Nokona glove dating regarding patches. The Black background with gold lettering was being used when I began at Nocona in 1976 and was used up until about 1993 when I believe the white background with blue Nokona type and red Indian Head in the overlay was used. In 2002 the current oval patch with Blue Nokona type was brought in.
This doesn't help that much with dating on the BM76 which had a long history with virtually the same patch through the mid 1990s but they did switch leathers to the "Earthquake" before that in about 1986. The Texas outline logo was in the line from 1980 to 1986. I'll have to dig around and see if I have earlier catalog. I know the BM76 came out in 1976 to commemorate the Bicentennial I thing. But it was a modification of the BMAC made by the new designer there, Jay Rawlings.
Hope this helps! Sorry it took so long!

Thanks for the info. No problem on the reply time. I may post a pick for you tonight. The glove has interesting markings in the leather. It's a light color (I guess the banana tan or saddletan? but with some darker strips which I guess is from the leather).

The label chronology helps as well. I've been in email discussions with the historian at Nokona on an SB1 I picked up that has the small white patch. She's helped with the chronology of labels from that timeframe (1940's).

Scott, I'll bet that was a Banana Tan BM76, that Banana was the first of their streaked leather models, then they went over to colors, gray, red, etc. with the same streaks and called the leather "Earthquake." I loved the silky smooth feel of the leathers, most all of the leathers Nocona used.
If you guys would press me on it, I had started a history book project on Nocona that never got finished. I need a little encouragement. It was a fun project and I had completed most of the copy.
One of my favorite stories (and I have this available for mailing) is the Nokona glove that was rescued from the Germans during World War II.
Let me hear from you.

Get a move on! That is an incredible project and will be a most worthy read. I am sure if you need any editing help there would be lots of volunteers (c:

Joe, I just replied on the other Nokona post. I'd like to see the book, especially a personally signed copy.

hhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrr. Pressing as hard as I can on softball66 to finish the project.

I've been dying for a Nokona ever since I first put my hand in one. I will own an AMG1150MT in Walnut before the end of the year. There's one place that carries them here in Calgary but they want $100 more than I can get them for in the U.S. They wanted $270 but I know they can be had in the U.S for $150-$160. I'm just having a hard time locating one in Walnut.

I like the AMG Mod traps as well. I'd love to have a Nokona buffalo glove with a modified trap but I prefer closed wrists like the AMG175 and looks like they only come in a closed weave web. That's why I like this BM-76 I got as it has the open bar web and the closed wrist.

Have you tried online to find one? Not sure what the exchange rate is these days but seems like you could find one online that would fall in the price range. They occassionally come up on ebay.

I've seen a few out there but not in the Walnut with the mod trap.

This is the exact glove I want but as you can see he's out of stock.

I gave a quick look at ballglovewarehouse.com, baseballsavings.com and dickssportinggoods.com. It looked like they had them in the $160 range. I think there was one on this forum as a matter of fact. You may want to look under the Gloves for Sale forum. I can't recall who it was but I think it was a walnut model. It was definitely an AMG1150MT. I'll see if I can find it.

It's under the For Sale/Trade forum by drzubia8. You can look at it. I can't tell if it's walnut. Looks too light, almost like buffalo but it isn't.

Hey thanks for looking around...I've had a hard time because some places list it as 1150WMT some just list it as 1150mt and show the walnut picture....some look nice and brown some looke orange....I just want to make sure I get the right one since it takes forever to get things here and dealing with a return is not what I want......I did see the one in the sale section but I'm with you in that I think that's the regular version and not the walnut....still nice though.......I know it's silly but I prefer the square logo on the strap instead of the round N.

I agree on the square patch. Good luck with it. Quite a beautiful backdrop to play baseball, up by the Canadian Rockies. That's the most beautiful land I've seen. I love the Icefields parkway drive.
