This weekend me and fellow modern glover/forum member Ed (spedrunr) got together for an afternoon of catch and to discuss/obsess over our hobby/addiction. We had a good time. If you have a chance to do something similar in your hometown I would definitely recommend it. I'm sure there are other Arizona glovers out there so if you wanna join in let us know.

The picture raises a number of questions for me:
First, Ed drove? I thought he had people to do that for him.
Second, how many PRO-12TCs can you get into a small car like that?
Third, and perhaps most importantly Mr. Diamondback, are you wearing a Los Angeles jersey? Huh?

haha, big john (little john is gold glove)
if you look real close, you'll see my chauffeur keeping the AC going (it's 112 degrees) and we're trying to put on fake smiles for the camera
2ndly, if you look closely, there are 2 full size suitcases in the trunk and a fungo. we originally wanted to hold all the gloves (40?) but we didn't want the guy who was taking the picture to have to stand out in the 112 (his wife was waiting for him in the car)
the park we're at is the same park i played the tempe parks and rec city championship over 33 years ago. we won with a "bad news bears" team of misfits (not me of course, but my teamates...haha). the bridge in the background actually follows 3rd base infield side and the outfield is to the left. mebbe next weekend we'll hop the locked gate and take a pic of us fielding grounders

Rethink the jumping the fence idea - you guys are both dads now, gotta start thinking about the police-blotter thing!

guilty as charged. growing up in in Phoenix the only chance I had to watch MLB was during spring training and the Giants AAA affiliate Phoenix Giants/Phoenix Firebirds. I grew up a Dodger fan (remember Fernandomania?) Well, ten years ago we got our team and you know the tune "root root root for the home team" but, there still lies some sentementality for the old Dodger blue.

As a SoCal girl, I'm glad to see you in the Dodger Blue. I love the Dodgers (though I live and breathe for the Red Sox).

Manny won't "give" you anything - he might "sell" you something, depending on his mood, his hamstrings, whose calling him between plays, etc.
It was a wonderful ride and I'm sorry it ended the way it did (and yeah, maybe I'm a little bitter too) but I must confess I'm relieved that the "Manny being Manny" era is over for the Red Sox.

I am so with you. I was so ticked off at him when he never took the bat off his shoulder basically against Mariano Rivera, and didn't play in Seattle, or against Joba Chamberlain. The Boston Globe says that he promised to behave if they didn't trade him and just refused to exercise his option years.
He is a jerk. I am only sorry that my fellow Dodger fans are embracing him because they either don't know what a jackass he is, or don't care. As a Dodger fan, I'm just glad he is probably a short term rental (or should I say gift), because it is only a matter of time before he acts up again. As a Red Sox fan, I say good riddance, except for the fact that Papi either needs his protection in the lineup or else is in a funk because he and Manny were friends and he misses him.
Ugh, I'll get off my soapbox now...

The Red Sox and Ortiz will be fine with Jason Bay. He's 90% the hitter M-Ram is and a better fielder and he's seven years younger.

Manny will most likely not act up again this year. Now he is out to prove that he deserves a multi-year big money contract, and he will start hitting like crazy. Simply because he's now motivated and has control of his own destiny. With the Red Sox holding on to those two options for 2009 and 2010, Manny had no say so over his future. Truth be told, his hitting skills are starting to break down, just a little bit. He knew that and he also knew that if the Red Sox exercised the last two options, he was most likely going to be a free agent for the 2011 season. Knowing that his skills are on the decline, what he did was smart for him, not that I agree with any of his crap. He purposely pushed the Red Sox for an answer on the option years and I'm sure with the blessing (if not the encouragement) of Scott Boras, he set out to alienate himself from the Red Sox, leaving them with no choice but to get him out of Boston. Obviously, the organization, and more importantly his fellow players could no longer trust him to give the Red Sox his best effort each and every day. Now he will get that long term big contract next year and we will see him again as an American League DH, maybe even in New York. A smart business move on his part, absolutely yes. As one of the best hitters to play this game, his actions were both deplorable and reprehensible. A stain on both the integrity and honor of Major League Baseball. More importantly, a huge stain on Manny himself and his HOF stats. His allegiance is to the almighty dollar, it always has been and it always will be. I too will miss Manny. He was an exciting hitter to watch, and I would much rather have him on my side when the game is on the line, than stepping up to the plate against my team. I have watched him do some incredible things with his bat over the last 7 1/2 years. Without him, the Red Sox do NOT win the World Series in 2004 or 2007, period. I have seen him carry this team on his back, producing all kinds of offense with his potent bat. Having said all that, enough is enough. Manny said it better than anybody, "they're tired of me and I'm tired of them". I wish him good luck in the future, and we should all know that he will be back in the American League in 2009 with a brand new long term contract, and miles and miles of baggage. Just Manny being Manny.

I want to go on record as saying that I am firmly against this turning into a discussion about the A.L. or more accurately the bosox

Thats World Champion Bosox to you...yeah, lets talk more about those old man shorts and funky haircuts on these guys
I miss Chandler AZ...used to visit there often. I would walk over to the Spring Training facility there and watch The Brewers. Good times.
