Vintage Baseball Glove Forum

The Rawlings PRO-SPT is a glove that has intrigued me for years, as my favorite player (Greg Gagne) used it is whole career. I'm wondering if this particular model glove was ever available to the general public and what does "SPT" stand for? I've hears 'shallow pocket', but am not sure. Any other info you have would be greatly appreciated!

I bought one in like 2003/4 from ballgloves.com. The carried an all TAN HOH and an all black Gold Glove one. It did not feel right though and I sold it on Ebay in 2005 I think.

I've owned a SPBB (shallow pocket, basket web, Black leather) and it had a VERY shallow pocket. This would be a great glove for a second basemen who catches EVERYTHING "trapper" style with two hands (versus closing the pocket around the ball).

Unfortunately I bought it before I know what "SP" meant. The glove did not meet my needs and I resold it. But it was a great glove and I could flip the ball out of the glove with ease...

What does the "SP" mean? Small product?

I have no idea what the sp was the T was the web. There was no ryhme or reason for some model names given gloves by my mentor sometimes named after fish or like the CM RL was his name. The Spt was very very popular at secnd base Ryne Sandburg comes to mind as I fixed his many times once flew to Chicago during the play offs (80's) because he needed help. When I saw his glove the first thing I noticed was the entire catching are had fallen out. (Needed a preist not me) when I ask him what happend he had no idea why it feel apart it turns out that he ran water in it before each inning because it felt perfect and the ball really stuck, but of course the glove rotted in no time. luckly his back up was not quite the the falling out stage. Did not waste my breathe trying to teach him not to wet the glove.

About Ryne Sandburg running water in his glove before each inning because "it felt perfect and the ball really stuck" – I guess if I was making a good deal of money playing ball (and getting my gloves for free!) and was convinced that putting water in the pocket would lower my error rate, I can easily understand why he would “water” his gloves!

In fact, even though I neither make money playing nor get my gloves for free – if I thought that putting water in the pocket would end balls popping out of my glove I would definitely “water” it!

What is the size of the PRO-SPT? I was told 12" but it looks smaller. Plus. if it is a 2nd base glove I don't see it as 12" Looks mor elike 11.25" or 11.5"

Some SPT's are 11" and some are 12". Depends on when/who they were made for. I might sell one.
