A Merry Christmas heads up

Just to let y'all know that Darlene Love will appear on Letterman Friday December 23rd. Many of you know her only as the cooking-challenged wife of Danny Glover in the classic Glover/Gibson "Lethal Weapon" movies. She was also the lead singer in the Crystals, in my opinion, the BEST girl group ever. She will perform "Christmas, Baby, Please Come Home" which she first recorded on the Phil Spector Christmas Album, in my opinion, the BEST secular Christmas Album of all time. Fire up th Sony Betamax, record the show, copy it to your Walkman, turn the volume up to 11 K, and enjoy all year. If you need a preview, there's this thing on the computer called utube where you can watch her. She does a gerat song with The Boss. Merry Christmas, Kids

I never miss it. Although I rarely watch Letterman anymore, I always tune in for the show with Darlene Love. She delivers a great performance every year. I also enjoy watching Jay Thomas tell the Lone Ranger story and trying to knock the meatball off the Christmas tree with a football. Can't wait.

Bill, thanks for the heads up. I agree that the Phil Specter Christmas Album is probably the best Christmas Album of all time but it's just not Christmas til I hear Sleighride by the Ronettes. Ronnie Specter or Darlene Love...I don't know, it's close.

Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses is the best though.

Thanks for the heads-up and I'll check that out. And Jim, I too, light up a little on Ronnie Specter Chritmas songs, and I also like that duet (done by several couples) of that one "it's cold outside" song and the original Mr. Grinch song.

I'm a closet hair metal fan, though, and at the risk of ribbing I seriously highly recommend the "A Twisted Christmas" CD by Twisted Sister for those who like a little heavier approach. This is one of my wife's favorite Christmas albums as well! They do serious renditions of Christams classics (Dee used to be a choir singer), including this version of "O Come All Ye Faithful"

It looks like you can download "Deck the Halls" for free from Amazon:

Nice one. Baby It's Cold Outside by Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone from Elf. Here's Christmas Wrapping. Read the lyrics.

Ah, Zooey, she can sing into my earbuds all day long. She and her bandmate M. Ward have a Christmas album out this year - She & Him Christmas - check it out if you have a chance. Also, if you don't have Sufjan Stevens Songs for Christmas box set you need to do yourself a huge favor and buy it now!! http://asthmatickitty.com/songs-for-christmas

Thanks Scott. I miss Ronnie and have been a big fan over the years and had the pleasure of seeing him a couple of times. I've got to say, though, there's something a little strange about he (or similarly, Ozzy) do a Christmas song. For some reason I don't view the Twister Sister boys the same way. I guess they are more peppy in nature (at least at this stage in their career).

I always thought that Waitresses song was Deborah Harry. Santa Baby (Marilyn Monroe?) is another that makes me smile.

Rob, Santa Baby was Eartha Kitt but Madonna did a great version of it.

I have XM in my car and I have been playing the two Holiday Music stations, 17 and 147, so much just to get me in the mood. Christmas kinda crept up on me this year as always.

Other honorable mentions - Let it Snow by Vaughn Monroe from Die Hard and Heatmiser by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

"Santa Baby" is a classic, really love it and Robert Earl Keen's "Christmas from the Family" is up there too.

Here is Darlene Love's first time singing Baby Please Come Home, on David Letterman's show in 1986. Note the lack of production values compared to the more recent performances: no backup singers, no orchestra, no saxophone player, no snow!
