John Edward Maynard was a co-founder along with Jason Draper of the Draper-Maynard Sporting Goods Co. in 1881. Maynard married Jason Draper's sister and in 1885, they had a son, John Edward Maynard Jr. John Jr. was nicknamed Ed to avoid confusion in the household. As an adult, John Jr. went by his middle name of Edward. By 1914 Edward was an officer and shareholder in the Draper Maynard Co. He became something of a spokesman for the company and did much of the public relations. One notable picture shows Mrs. Dave Bancroft wearing a huge D&M glove that Ed Maynard was to present to Nick Altrock, the "Funny Man of Baseball" before a baseball game.
Edward Maynard was an avid outdoors-man and invited many of the star players of the day to his hunting cabin on Lake Squam in New Hampshire. Below is a photo taken before the hunting trip. Tris Speaker looks especially dapper in his hunting outfit. That is not a coincidence, since Edward Maynard manufactured and sold a line of outdoor clothing.Below is an elargement from the ad showing Edward and friends gathered around the cook stove. Edward also produced a line of western themed leather gear. How did we get so far off baseball?

John Maynard Sr. retired from D&M circa 1929-30 when he was about 80 years old. Since Jason Draper had died back in 1913, the company was turned over to the sons of both men to run. During this time, Edward Maynard manufactured his own line of sports equipment including gloves , uniforms, tennis rackets, etc. I believe he used the manufacturing facilities of D&M. Legendary Auctions sold a 1930's D&M glove in their May 2011 auction that sported an Ed. Maynard Inc. stamped wrist strap button.

The stamped picture pocket of this Ed Maynard glove is interesting in the reference it makes to the D&M Co. Instead of "The Lucky Dog Kind", the glove is stamped with Maynard's own variation, "The Sign of the Little Dog".

The Daniel Webster Highway turns into Main Street as it enters Plymouth NH. At the corner of Main & High Streets is the refurbished Draper-Maynard building, now part of the campus of Plymouth State University.


Traveling several blocks further south on Main St. through the picturesque town you come to the Community Guaranty Savings Bank.


The building above was remodeled in 1980 into the bank. it was a Post Office in the early 1900's and in the 1930's became Ed Maynard Sporting Goods. The picture below looks to be from the late 1930's. The Ed Maynard Sporting Goods sign is hanging in front. The old facade below the sign and brick chimney to the right are still somewhat recognizable despite the extensive renovation in 1980.
