I wonder who paid $387,000 for the Halper Lou Gehrig glove. Mr Mitt posted once about staying away form game used equipment. There is a lesson to be learned there. The article seems pretty well researched and presented.

Dave did a very good job researching this. Yes, Mike, a fool and his/her money are parted all the time. Penny Marshall (of Hollywood fame), it's reported, is the fool in this instance. Ironically, another comedian, Billy Crystal, was duped by the dating of a Mantle gamer in the same auction.

There's too much faith involved in game used items. I'm an atheist/skeptic/contrarian, so you can surmise my stance on faith. No one, the players involved nor the so-called experts, can say with complete certainty that an item was game used by a particular player. Add to the mix conflicts of interest whereby authenticators and auction houses peddle the exact stuff their authenticating. I'll stick to store model gloves, thank you very much... This fool parts with enough money on that crap without getting suckered into gamers!!!

I have a game-used Joe Phillips glove authenticated by "Mr. Mitt."

I know a little about Steve Martin and his art collecting. He bought a lot of contemporary art work in the early 1980's that was ill-advised and took a beating when the work fell out of favor and lost value by the late 1980's. He became disenchanted and began only collecting older works from the impressionists and turn of the century artists thinking that era would be much more stable. Mr. Mitt's posting was interesting in itself and left me thinking about that old saying, "fool me once...
