Hi Guys,

Here is the epsisode 904 with the glove story.

Heartlalnd Highways had come to my home back a few months ago and did the filming. They filmed for over 2 hours but edited much of that down to a shade over an 8 minute show. This program will very likely be on some regional PBS stations and then likely put on RFD programming (Rural Farm Development which I believe is a nationwde tv show, like on channel 231 on dish not sure about the channel for direct tv etc.)

I shared a lot of information on glove evloution, resources within our hobby such as, Joe's resouce book and price guides, John's new book, thanked my book reviewers Joe, Rob and JD and US history reviewer David Denton and then mentioned the development of cool glove forums such as Brett's and Mikes but that was not included in the 8 minutes. I had no control over what they put into it and did not know until it aired what was really going to be in show. So I will say thanks again guys for all your efforts and wish it could have been a part of the show too.

The glove used by the interviewer lady to play some catch was a MW Joe Medwick with a single tunnel loop web and I used a double grommett flap web style by an unknown maker. She used both hands and did a good job catching the ball. It was a fun day and I hope you guys enjoy the glove story. Hopefully the show will do some good to get more people interested in our glove hobby.

Hi Scott, Thanks. I had to limit myself to gloves more than mitts. Mitts are cool too, but my interest really is moreso in gloves and I have a very limited budget (as my wife reminds me) and limited space (as one can see by the glove logts I built up to my 9 foot ceiling in my den).

The cool thing about our hobby is each collector can collect what they enjoy. I personally like collecting gloves for their web styles and glove styles that show glove evolution and not much into endorsements or teams or brands. It seems I found a bit of a glove niche years back when I started my collection and thankfully not too many seemed to go the same direction I went. There are other collectors that come to mind who collect from different angles such as HOF-endorsed gloves and mitts (John Graham's wonderful collection reflects this a lot) OK brand gloves (Brett Lowman specializes a lot with this neat brand), Goldsmith (Josh Drasher has a cool collection of these) early crescent padded gloves and other amazing leathers (What can one say about Rob Mucha and JD's collections but wow!) Mr. Mitt, Jerry has amazing leathers and the list goes on and on and on of numerous collectors and I know I have not seen them up close and personal as of yet.

So the cool thing about collections in my humble opinion is they give us something to look at, talk about and even aspire towards if we choose too. Yes, I drool at other collections as well. LOL Thankfully, there have been times when I could buy a glove on ebay at a very decent price because it fit into my collection nicely and few collected that type of glove. So, I was able to pick it up. My softball collection is one I really enjoy and hardly anybody seems to give a hoot about those, but I enjoy them. Actually though I ended up paying more than I cared too for some of those old softies but I like em.

There are times when some of the veteran collectors bid on the same glove and sometimes for totally differnt reasons. I would bid for the web style or glove style and someone else for its brand and another for who endorsed the glove. Then the one with more money, timing or who wants it the most usually gets it, but I consider myself lucky to just have each of the glove I have ended up with.

Many of the gloves in my collection are not as good of condition as some of the same gloves I have seen in other folks collections, nor are mine perhaps as valuable, but each old glove in the collection is unique in its own way.

I don't want come across to others on this forum as having the "big head" from my collection. If readers perceive it that way, I am sorry. I do have a passion for the hobby and if it were not for the help of Joe Phillips, JD and Rob and others I would not have any attempted a book in the first place but just kept my collection to myself in my den. I felt very fortunate to have the tv people to come to Olney, IL and do one of their few collector shows a year and they chose our old leather friends of the hobby to show their viewers. I hope it does move our hobby a step forward.

I look forward to someone else in the hobby to run with the next book, or website or whatever to help move our glove hobby along. It will be appreciated.

Just got a chance to watch the video and it was absolutely fantastic! Had to play it a second time because, like the rest of you, I simply love seeing old gloves. Beyond sharing that passion, don't we all enjoy learning about other's unique glove collecting focus/niche and how they display their treasures? I sure do. And Dave, as for anyone perceiving you having a "big head"... two words... Screw 'Em!!! Your passion has translated into greatly appreciated publicity for the hobby which benefits all of us.

Thanks so much for your comments. Coming from a veteran glover, like yourself, means a lot to me. Without support by veteran collectors and even our newbies to the hobby makes it easy to lose motivation for trying something creative in our hobby and can cause interest to wain. A kind word of encouragement can go a long way in todays world and enthusiam or the lack there of can be contagious. So I really appeciate your note.

Hi Brett, Glad you saw that Diamond web. You have at least a couple of its sibling gloves in your collection. LOL I wish I had turned that diamond web so the cool diamond cut out in the web showed up a little better but I had no idea how they were going to film and I was just hoping I had the gloves in an orderly fashion and not jumping out of the lofts. Glad you eyed that diamond in the rough.

When they first came to film I had all the gloves in the lofts in their correct spots but it seems they showed the lofts after I had removed some of the gloves from the lofts. I had taken down some gloves such as the fingerless, webless , 2" sewn webs etc. and placed them along a board plank so I could cover a bit on glove evolution. I also noticed where I usually kept the MW Joe Medwick glove (the interviewer lady used it for catch) just had a stick holder standing up. LOL

I wish I had a genuine fingerless glove (don't most of us) for my collection as that is my only replica glove but I have not had the luck of getting one nor the cash for one. If John Graham ever throws one of his fingerless gloves in the trash can in Texas I hope he will let me hall off his trash that day. I am fine with the replica. I imagine if William sees the tv segment that he will take note it is not one of his cool creations. Hopefully he won't mind me having it as I had it before he came to your glove forum.

It was a great day to share the gloves that day and the outside weather cooperated nicely too.

If any of you guys ever get in the Olney, Il area give me a call so we can get together and visit in person. If you forget to bring gloves don't worry as we can just pull some from the old glove loftes. LOL

I know you can make some mighty cool gloves. You have that magic touch with the leather. I have that reach replica in my glove book. Sure I wish it were real but I am just pleased that someone like yourself can duplicate the old artifacts so we can still appreciate them and even have one to fit into our glove collections.
