Vintage Baseball Glove Forum

I am wondering how many SABR members beside myself participate on this board. It may be fun to start a SABR "vintage equipment committee" and meet at the national conventions.

I'm not a member, but I could be convinced to become one. Everyone that I've talked to about SABR says that the membership base doesn't generally discuss equipment beyond milestone research, ie. the first player to wear a helmet, etc. If that's not the case, and I'm missing out, please correct me. It's been on my list of things to get involved with, but it keeps getting put off for lack of urgency. In either case, I'd love to meet up at the National. How about at booth 542P?

I highly reccommend membership in SABR. Membership includes 2 published jounals a year, which are worth the $40 membership fee alone. Each journal if full of member written articles on topics such as individual players, umpires, owners, a certain team's season or era. My personal favorites are stories of little known characters in baseball. Participation in SABR also allows one to enjoy the posts on SABR-L, and email based list serve that allows members to share research ideas just as members do on this board.

SABR members can join committees on topics such as 19th century baseball, the dead ball era, the ball park committee, etc. I could see how a vintage equipment committee would fit right in. Posts such as mikesglove presents here would be great material for SABR.

As I am writting this, SABR is preparing for SABR Day to be held on January 29. Each local chapter will be holding a meeting open to anyone interested in learning more about SABR. I don't think I have done SABR justice with my description here, so please take an oportunity to check it out for yourself. If you need help locating your nearest chapter, contact me and I will see what I can do. If you are in the Cooperstown area, my local chapter will meet at the Hall of Fame at 1 pm. We will have a virtual live tour of the San Francisco Giants ball park, and then the education department at the Hall will have a presentation on WS artifacts. We will be joined by live feed by the San Francisco and Cleveland chapters. Join us if you can.

I am unable to do traveling but I have corresponded with Andy McCue and Susan Petrone about my last glove books I have written. They placed my previous book, "A Visual History of Ball Gloves" in the SABR Index and my latest book, "Baseball Gloves Merge With America's Past" has been submitted to Susan and Andy for them to check out.

I really didn't do a good job of stating the most obvious advantage of SABR participation, and that is meeting fellow baseball enthusiasts. There are many current SABRites that would love to hear what Forum members have to say. Personally, how I got here was attending a regional SABR meeting in Cooperstown, where a Utica area resident gave a presentation on a local sporting goods company--Ken-Wel. This peaked my interest in old mitts, and I started looking mitts, mostly on eBay, and other items. Then an internet search brought me here, where I learned of many other glove manufactures that I had never heard of. I think what we have to say here will be well received, and Forum members may learn things that they did know about other aspects of baseball. The really big benefit is getting to meet people and share what you have learned, read and researched.
