Disappointed

Received the next live Hunts auction catalog in the mail today and I must say that I'm really disappointed. Hunts is usually the one auction house you can count on to have a selection of good to great gloves in their live auctions. Unfortunately ,that's not the case this time around. Only 3 gloves!! A late era Spalding Ruth, a Goldsmith Carl Mays and a mid-line Reach glove. What's going on? There seems to be a never ending supply of Babe Ruth autograph balls in every auction - where are the gloves??? Guess if you like dishes and plates with baseball figures you'll be excited about this auction. Oh, and those trophy lovers will be happy too. But what about us glove-centric people??? Boo!!!

But they do have a great Winchester Baseman's glove in their monthly online auction
After I looked through the catalog today, I checked the slush fund, the Winchester glove ad item is fantastic

That display is very nice - I'm not a big Winchester guy but I wouldn't mind having that in my collection. No worries though, my slush fund is no where close to what that piece will go for.
Hunts does offer gloves more than any other auction house. I'm just disappointed because I was hoping to see some great leather flipping through the catalog. I went through it twice hoping I missed a section.

What's the lot number on the Carl Mays? Is it tucked into the football auction this weekend? Curious to see if the Mays is the same model as mine.

It's the next live auction - the lots aren't on the website yet. The Mays is for a LH thrower - I vaguely remember yours - the one in the auction has a full web, maybe a drab olive color - have to go look at the catalog again. Stampings still have some silver. No pic of the back but it says it has a cloth label.

I'd suppose it's a D&M G56 as that was a model he used and advertised for Draper Maynard. You can't tell for certain from the photo, but the back of the glove could be a G56.

Here's an example of one of Jackson's G56 ads.

Just got this last week and it mentions Jackson as a user of D&M - quite the list of players. I can't believe this company wasn't successful longer than they were.

if you missed the winchester in hunts and you want another crack at it, it's up on ebay now for a ridiculous price.

Luckily I have a $6,000 Winchester Shotgun. I will hang on to that.
On Draper Maynard. I think when Maynard died in the early '30s that a little of the life went out of the company. Before that, they were the Rawlings of the day. But Rawlings really took over with the Doak glove and having Harry Lattina around for design improvement. Which I've written about all of this. I think. Covered in the D&M Museum newsletter story.
Ruth, Wagner, Jackson all D&M users. Doesn't get better 'n that. I think I have one of the last gloves produced at the Plymouth plant. or. . . like to think I do. It's a G37.
Sands of time pass us all by. Carpe diem.

Although I'll wait until they post better pictures on their site to pass judgement, it looks like a generic bunch of gloves to me. It is good to see gloves in an auction, though.
