There was a thread a while back on some of the harder to find Spalding Personal Models. Pretty sure that this is the first Carlton Willey PM I've seen.
Anyone else have one or remember seeing one?

I think there are about a dozen or so Spalding personal models and the catalog source book shows (as personal models) Don Larsen*, Sam Esposito, Al Dark, Sal Maglie ('58), Rocky Colavito*, Frank Bolling, Don Larsen, Jack Sanford, Al Dark (59); Whitey Ford*, Rocky Colavito,Frank Bolling, Al Dark (1960); Whitey Ford*, Rocky Colavito, Frank Bolling, Bob Shaw (1961); Jim Bunning*, Whitey Ford, Roger Maris, (1962); Rocky Colavito*, Whitey Ford, Jim Bunning, Roger Maris, Frank Bolling, Jerry Lumpe (1963); Whitey Ford*, Roger Maris (1965); Pete Ward*, Jim Bourton, Gary Peters, Roger Maris, (1966) etc. Notice we're missing 1964 where Carlton Wiley's personal model might have been made.
The asterisk indicates this is the most expensive glove in the line, the others just under that price (or maybe the same) AND the most rare produced. Spalding didn't sell as many gloves as Rawlings and therefore these gloves will be rarer than Rawlings top of the lines. MacGregor likely didn't have the sales Spalding had and there will be fewer MacGregor personal models that Spaldings. Find a Gus Bell GC10 personal model for instance.
So Spalding using Major Leaguers are where a number of these models
(all made by Rawlings at this time as like gloves from the Rawlings line) of these show up like two Rocky Colavito personal models that Sandy Koufax used.

Thanks Joe! Knew I could count on you for the info. I didn't realize that the '64 catalog was missing while I looked thru the listings. I'll bet that Willey PM is a pretty tough one if it was only made that one year. I have a very low end Trapocket with his endorsement and have seen a couple others over the years on ebay, but that's about it.

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I found this thread and was hoping I could get some help with these.

Does anyone know the year(s) these were made? Is either one more rare than the other? And I noticed the a Personal Model was mentioned, are either one of these a PM?

Both of these gloves are in my collection along with 3 different Spaulding Advisory Staff photos. Carlton was a very dear friend of mine so I collect anything and everything with him on it.

Any help or information would be much appreciated!

According to The Glove Catalog Source Book, the 1021 model appears in the 1960 Spalding Catalog and the 42-277 was sold in the 1961 and 1962 catalogs.

Neither of your gloves are Personal Models, although any Carlton Willey endorsed glove is somewhat scarce, probably because they were only available for a couple of years. They do show up on ebay every now and then. The Personal Model that I wrote the first post on was a top of the line glove, maybe the most expensive glove they sold that year. In fact it was advertised as a gamer of Ken McMullen if I remember right and the only Willey PM I've ever seen. I have the same 6 finger model you have and was glad to find it as an old Milwaukee Braves fan. Nice gloves!

Okdoak, I remember the glove you were talking about, I was watching it. I probably would have bid if it was not a gamer, I wasn't sure if the history behind it was solid. In the 20 or so years collecting Carlton items, that is the first and only time I have seen that model glove.

I seem to find the 42-277 way more often than the 1021. I would eventually like to find an upgrade for the 1021. It's in not too bad shape, but I would like to find one with much less use.

Do either of you know if these models came with a box? I would assume with him not being a "star" player that they didn't come with a box.
