Glove Collector's Corner

Hi All,

Mike Ellis gave me a great idea over burgers in Montana a month or so ago. He said he thought it would be neat to make the glove site more interactive or more personal. He suggested an area where we could showcase or learn more about each other, share our interests, favorite gloves, manufacturers, etc. I think it’s a great idea and will help to personalize an area and maybe learn more about each other, maybe even place a face with a name or to facilitate trades.

So I have been working on this new area for the website called Collector’s Corner. I put together a quick questionnaire in fillable PDF format with a few questions so we can all learn a bit more about each other. Picture a page with just a bunch of collector names on it. The names will be links to an attached page or bio on that collector. I wanted to run the following by you guys and am looking for some feedback as to other questions or things you would like to know about your fellow collectors before I publish the final form. The chatter about the idea has been very well received so far and I hope you guys will want to be a part of it. Below are some of the fields:

- Name
- City, State of Residence (not an address)
- Glove Collecting Interests
- Want List
- Favorite Gloves & Manufacturers
- Last Glove You Would Ever Part With
- Interests Outside of Gloves
- Do You Want to be Part of the Glove Collector’s Directory Network (a behind the scenes name, address and e-mail address only available to us collectors and not viewable on the public site)

What else do you think we should capture? Thanks for your input.

JD

P.S. – My webguy and I are also working on a search function for the site. Type in “Joe Blow” and see all of his gloves in one place or “G52” and see all of those models. It will be a valuable tool for when the site gets more pictures. We are up to about 6,500 now and that's only from about 40 collectors. When are the rest of you 600+ members gonna get on board? :?

Thanks for all your work - I can't wait for the search engine feature - that is going to be great. Not that I don't enjoy browsing all the gloves when I'm looking for something but for those times I'm in a rush, it will be useful.

The Collectors Corner sounds great - better let Facebook know they have a new rival coming. :)

The collector's corner sounds like a great idea and a nice way to expand your already fantastic site.
Is there a way, that new glove additions can be identified when added to your site? I enjoy going through the glove catagories, but if a new glove could be highlighted in some way as it's added, would save some scanning time. Not that I don't enjoy seeing the gloves again & again...I just hate to miss anything new.
Ask your Web-guy!!

thanks again for what you've done for the hobby.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have lots of ideas for the site but it's just a matter of getting them implemented. I'm not a programmer and the database behind the scenes is done in SQL I think. I know SQL as much as I know Chinese. That's my problem. Unfortunately, it's not that flexible. If it were, I would just go behind the scenes and carve up all the big galleries and cut them into sub-galleries. Say for Rawlings, I could do a pre-war and a post-war or separate them into fielders, basemitts and catchers mitts - something, anything. I didn't anticipate it growing so big so quick and didn't plan for it at the beginning. The good thing is I just had to buy more web space. I originally bought 5GB. We used that up in a year and now I'm approaching 10GB. Let's keep making it bigger.

Dave, to answer your question, we have talked about a way to make only the new additions come up as they do in the Library but we don't quite know if it's possible to make it happen on the glove side. When new catalogs and articles go up in the library, an auto-email gets sent to everyone who checked the "Receive Digest" box alerting them of the new items that went up. It works well on that side of the fence but don't quite know if we can make it happen on the picture side. Believe me, we'll try.

If you guys have any suggestions for what you would like to see on the site, just give me a call or drop me an e-mail. Thanks again guys.

We are getting closer on the Glove Collector's Corner. I went through my first log-on this weekend. I just need to know if there is anything else you want to know or learn about your fellow collectors. Right now, all I'm going to capture is the information in the first thread. Let me know soon as it won't be easy to change or add to once it's up and running. Suggestions and ideas are welcome. Thanks.

Hi JD,

You upcoming expansion on the website is getting very exciting. You are too much!!!. :) I wonder if it might help us to know how long people have been collecting gloves? Under a year, 1-5 years, 6-10, etc This could be a fill in the blank or a check off in a Year(s) category such as the above. Just curious about the those in the hobby. Wondering how many newbies (new blood) and how many have been at it a while. Just a thought.

Love the idea of search the glove type and to check out individual peoples collections in one spot. Terrific ideas.

Dave

A website directory would be a great addition to the list of info. I love the personal websites.

The Collector’s Corner is now up and running on the new website. You’ll have to register to create your profile and then the site will open up to you. If you had a username and password to the old site, you’ll still need to register as the whole website has been replaced. We had to start all over on a new platform to pull it off.

All the links are in blue on the right and those are dynamic. I can create new pages and links about anything we want, whenever we want.

Your username should be what you want to be known by and may be your screen name on the Forum or eBay or you can create a new one. Fill out the brief registration fields, go to your e-mail, get your temporary password and log in. Once you are logged in, go to the Site Administration link to pull up your dashboard, which will allow you to change your password and fill out your profiles.

Get registered, fill out your profiles and let me know what you think.
