Coming clean on a Mantle MMF

Gentlemen, I have to come clean and say that a recent Mantle MMF sold on ebay was one I had. Here it is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=013

A friend of mine sold it for me. I had picked it up, along with an old Wilson and a Nokona, in order to get the Nokona glove. I worked on it to clean it up and relaced it, using new Tanner's lace in the pocket and fingers and vintage Nokona lace (in very good condition) on the palm and other areas. Just thought I'd fix it up some before selling it. Wasn't wanting to make a killing off of it, just didn't need it so I thought I'd pitch it out there. I tried to list all the faults so as not to mislead anyone. Better to be over critical than to sell a "pig in a poke".

Well, the guy who bought it is now giving my friend a hard time, saying it wasn't completely relaced, evidently saying the vent holes on the back were supposed to be laced. He wants my fried to halve the cost of relacing with him or he'll post negative feedback.

I've read here that those are vent holes on these MMF gloves. We sent him pictures of other MMFs showing the same holes. There is an extra hole in the thumb area that, quite frankly, has me puzzled. I can't remember what it was but you can see it on the photo. I tend to think it was a vent hole as well but other models don't show it.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this? I personally think the guy's trying to get my friend to cut the cost after he bought it. They're still trying to resolve it.

The holes on the back above the wrist adjuster are vent holes in my opinion. I've had a couple Rawlings gloves like this and have never seen lacing through those holes before. Here is a XFG16 that has the air holes on the back:

If there are other issues with the relacing, I'm sure you guys can come to a compromise about what should be done. However, if the only lacing issue is the holes on the back, you shouldn't have to do much considering that was the way it was made.

a couple issues ...

First of all, I am certain you are correct about the vent holes in the back of the glove. Those are designed there for a reason. The XFG16 shown above is a good example. Before Rawlings improved the closed back design, the vent holes were thought to be necessary. I have noticed on some of the early horizontal hole Holdster models that the holes are still there. I think the holes disappeared when the Holdster finger slot was broadened and rounded; I guess that provides enough ventilation, because the vents have disappeared!

I don't konow about the extra hole.

Second, the item description clearly states that the glove has already been relaced, with the exception of the palm. Nowhere does it say the relacing job was done by an expert with all knowledge of how to relace this particular model glove. Nowhere is there any implication that the relacing was done perfectly, and nowhere is there a guarantee on the perfection of the relacing job. Now then the seller did provide a way for the buyer to resolve any dissatisfaction issues: return the item.

Third: All this for a dang $36 glove? At some point the buyer needs to be reminded what he paid for and how little he paid for it. I am all for standing behind your gloves you sell, but at the same time, buyer beware, and then, buyer be reasonable!

I'm going to tell my friend to tell the guy to send it back. This guy (in Las Vegas) is insistent that there should have been lacing there.

I'd rather have the glove back than yield. I'll send it off to Kenny Jenkins and let him fix it up rather than pay this guy off.

I'll agree with the other's regarding the vent holes. I have NEVER seen a flove with laces in those holes.

The other hole, in the thumb area- is that the one near the base of the thumb, as seen in the eBay photos? That looks like a hole for the thumb loop, with the loop missing or pulled back into the glove.

It looks like it although I never saw evidence of a thumb loop. Doc may be able to comment if these models ever had thumb loops. The buyer says that's what it was for although I can't see where the other strap for the thumb loop would come out. I honestly can't remember why I didn't catch it other than I though it was a vent hole because I've seen plenty of thumb loops and this was only one hole.

As a matter of fact, the Nokona that came with it (an AMG125) was missing both the thumb and pinky loops. It as no big deal as that's a small enough glove that they wouldn't be missed. The boy I got it for plays 2nd base on my son's team and had no problem not having the thumb loops.

Oh, well. We'll see how it plays out. My friend has offered a refund if the guy will send it back. Stay tuned...

Well, there you go. The doc spoke even as I was typing. Oh well, I'll fall on my sword and tell my friend to either pay for the shipping and take it back or pay the guy half of the $30 he wants.

My bad.

VENT HOLES ON MMF

HI, AM LOOKING AT TWO MMF'S RIGHT NOW. DON'T SEE A VENT HOLE BUT I THINK YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO SEE A TIE KNOT, IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT A HOLE ABOUT 1/2 INCH ABOVE THE PIPING. THE GLOVE SEEMS TO ALWAYS HAVE THE 5 VENT HOLES AT THE BACK OF THE HAND. GOOD LUCK
