Good glove photos are tough to find

This mitt is from a HOF exhibit in Tokyo. It was made by Mizuno and given to Lou Gehrig during a barnstorming tour in 1934. It's a cool looking mitt with the tunnel loop webbing.

I wondered if Dazzy Vance used the KenWel glove throughout his career. It was hard to find definitive images but I think these Getty Images show pretty conclusively he did use the KenWel model for some of his career. The first photo is 1929 alongside Walter Johnson. You can just make out the Dazzy Vance patch on the side of the thumb.


The second photo shows a later "Pro Model" KenWel glove of the 1930's with the large Utica patch. It looks like Vance removed the finger lacing on this one.


The third photo is circa 1932 and shows the buckle back model with single tunnel web with the small sewn web below.

It is pretty cool looking. It looks like a stiffener at the top to corral balls not caught cleanly in the pocket. Here is a Spalding ad for that design from an 1890's catalog. I can barely make out the description but it looks like the mitt in the ad was meant for basemen/infielders. The team photo seems to indicate its use as a catchers mitt also

i really love the first photo of the ball player with the two different hand gloves, one with metal clasps and the other with a strap closure. Definitely a rare to see the backs of such gloves. As far as a photo of a workman's glove, that is about as good as it gets.

A mid 1930's photo of two ball players. What looks to be a D&M/Goldsmith glove on the right and a Rawlings "Bill Doak" glove on the left. The Doak model seems to feature the double tube web patented by Rawlings in 1936. That feature didn't stay around long and was soon replaced by the typical tunnel webbing. There is a description in the 1935 Rawlings catalog on JD's site and there is an actual model shown in the Bill Doak gallery section. It's a rare one!

Smoky Burgess in 1960 deciding on his game day mitt. From what little factory stamping is visible, they look like Rawlings mitts.


The mitt Burgess used in 1959 to catch the Harvey Haddix extra inning no-hitter. The model GP10 isn't in the MacGregor retail catalogs

More catchers mitts! Cool photo of Georgetown Univ. player in the 1920's with a Wilson mitt featuring their patented wrist strap from 1914. The other equipment mfgs. were also developing wrist strap cushioning around that time. Rawlings and Goldsmith come to mind. The Wilson version is pretty intricate.

Here's an interesting TOC catchers mitt. It looks like the crescent pad has an external access at the end. The pad also looks to incorporate lacing that bridges across the thumb to the body of the mitt in some sort of webbing. Pretty cool!
