Glove Leather?Hides

Sitting here watching all the ball games begin, i aways like to pull out my gloves and condition them. I am noticing a lot of gloves soak up the vaseline more than other gloves, which led me to wonder how many different types of leather have been used in glove making and do some absorb more vaseline than others because of what they are made of?

I'm no expert on the different parts of the hides they used or in the tanning process, but I've had the same experience with my gloves. Some of my gloves have a tighter, less porous grain and some others have a softer more suede like feel to them that's not caused just by a lot of use. I don't know if that's a property of that part of the hide or the way it was tanned. Of course, gloves that are on the dry side will really soak up petroleum jelly or whatever conditioner I use. I remember seeing one of those baseball documentaries and Billy Werber talking about how he specifically wanted his gloves made from the belly of the hide because that was the softest part. He must have been as hands on with his gloves as Ted Williams was with his bats.
