Some new before/after photos

I've had some really great gloves come through my studio lately, figured I'd show some of them on here.

I have two pages with examples, the Preservation page highlights the gloves that are repaired using as much vintage material as possible. The Restoration page shows examples of vintage gloves with repairs in new leather. Click the photos on either page to view the slide show.

The list of gloves that are awaiting work is equally impressive. I'll update this thread as those gloves progress.

Another before/after from the Jim Daniel collection. This one is a very rare lace back crescent fielder's glove circa 1890's.

Great work. Just out of curiosity, what purpose did that little tag attached to string have?

The tab is used to pull the lace over to the hook on the opposite side of the glove to tighten it on the hand. I'm not sure if it was a common part on lace back gloves, but, if it was, most are missing that piece.

Another from the collection of John Graham. This one is a Stall & Dean Ty Cobb. It had a major lining issue at the heel as well as some ink from a previous owner. The ink cleaned up nicely and the lining was stabilized and repaired using vintage leather. I've got a stock of pre-industrial revolution ozone that I picked up on ebay a few years ago. Just waiting for the phone to ring.

Below are a few selections of recent work that has come through. A nice grouping of repairs, restoration, and preservation. In order of their historical time line.

First, a buckle and strap replacement that was done for a fellow forum member, Deacon. Due to the scarcity of available parts and the lack of appropriateness in straps from later eras, this restoration was made from scratch using my stock of vintage horsehide. The strap was dyed, burnished, and polished, then worked in to reflect the age of the mitt. Sometimes, starting from zero is the best option. I think it came out well.

Next, a George Sisler model D&M mitt. Obviously lacking most of the original web. This example was repaired using horsehide from a donor mitt. I maintained the original eyelets and lacing.

A Joe Sewell model Winchester glove. I closed the seam separation on the thumb and re-laced the heel using custom made horsehide lace. Interestingly, while I was re-lacing the heel, I came across a detail that I'd personally never seen before. The eyelets were reinforced with a strip of woven Winchester labels. Fresh as the day they were made, minus the holes, of course.

Lastly, and certainly not least, a pristine Joe DiMaggio pre-war split finger. This glove had suffered some lacing loss, and unfortunately, some of the eyelets had popped in the web. I remade the lacing to it's original spec and reset the eyelets. Good as new!

This will likely be the last restoration before the National, as I catch up on my on my recent surge in orders. Not a bad one to end on. Most of you probably saw this on ebay in March. I was delighted to have it show up at my door on it's way to it's new owner. It's not every day that you get to spend some time with what many would call the holy grail of glove collecting.

Here it is upon arrival.....



After a very thorough cleaning.....



When it first arrived, the front was very dirty and the stamping was only visible upon very close inspection. After a good cleaning, which included a complete unlace and eyelet/lace scrub down, the stampings became much more visible. All the important details came to the surface. Based on the available photos on JD's site, I'd have to say that this is perhaps the most original example that exists. Not a single piece of lace, save for a few knots, was altered after it left the factory. Every detail was reconstructed as it was using only the original materials. An absolute treat.
