Looking for Gloves

Postby larjoranj » July 26th, 2009, 10:30 am

Hi All. Several years ago I got rid of a lot of my collection when I had a costly cracked foundation that required a 5 digit repair while I was helping my kids thru college. I regret selling my gloves and not using savings and I'm ready to start building my collection back up. About half of the 100 or so gloves I got rid of were pre-war Reds, especially the 39-40 Teams. That's where I'd like to start. If anybody has a high quality example of one of these you could help me out with please email me at pld100@att.net. I can't afford to get them all at once but I'm ready to get started and will try to knock out a couple a month. I'm not picky about brand:

Billy Myers, Bill Werber, Harry Craft, Ival Goodman, Mike McCormick, Lonny Frey, Eddie Joost, Morris Arnovich, Al Simmons, Vince DiMaggio, Johnny Rizzo, Bucky Walters, Paul Derringer, Johnny Vander Meer, Gene Thompson, Whitey Moore, Joe Beggs, Jim Turner, Lee Grissom, Wally Berger, Lew Riggs, Elmer Riddle ( but it would have to be at least near mint, I still have a couple that are excellent +).

I may have missed some, but those are all gloves that I had and would like to replace. Here are some that I never found a good example of or not at all but would like to find that are listed in the glove guide:

Red Barrett, Bud Hafey, Frenchy Bordagaray (anybody ever seen one),Les Scarsella, Milt Galatzer ( haven't seen one of these either)Dick West ( or him either ).

I admittedly am not partial to catchers mitts so I will wait til last on these and I have a very nice Frank McCormick.

Wow, I don't ask much, do I? Stumbled across the forum recently and have enjoyed reading it the last few weeks. Thanks all.

Better Reds

Postby softball66 » July 26th, 2009, 3:21 pm

Hi Phillip, glad to have you back. I'm a Reds glove collector like you and have held on to my 1939-40 player gloves as you were focused in on.
I have most of those you mentioned, but unfortunately, no extras. Some will be tuff to come up with I'm sure as eBay relinquishes the harder gloves reluctantly it seems. Some that I have, I've not seen again.
Again, any tip(s) I can offer, just drop me a PM at glovecollector@mac.com.

tough searching

Postby larjoranj » July 26th, 2009, 5:11 pm

I'm afraid it will be almost impossible to equal what I had. A couple I stumbled on by accident. A Hutch Harry Craft was on Ebay about 7 years ago and the seller had a picture of a left-handed glove that looked in good shape but the pic wasn't great. The lefty drew little interest and I think I got it for maybe 30 bucks. Lo and behold when it arrives I pull out the most stone cold right handed glove I've owned. Never caught a ball, tons of silver and a Hutch patch that looked like it had been sewn on that day to a pumpkin orange glove. Either they put the wrong pic on or reversed it somehow to make it look left-handed.
Another time I saw a Arnovich, it either had no pic or a bad pic of just the front. I asked the seller for some more pics and it turned out to be a Trusport with perfect label on the back, factory laced pinky and ring finger not visible on ebay and great stampings with some silver left. I got it for a song.

Wow, the good old days of Ebay back in the day. Oh well.
