Watching this guy close out the Sox last night, I was looking at his glove. I don't know the official name for the pouch thing on the outside of the index finger to put the the finger in. It didn't look like he had his finger in there- just kept it in the glove.

I've never been a "finger out" guy, so I'm curious about that. Particularly, what's the point of having that thing for the finger on the outside of the glove if a guy keeps his finger in anyway? I just kept asking myself, "why does he have that thing on his glove if he doesn't put his finger in it?"

I believe it started with Maddux tipping off his pitches by how his index finger curled during his delivery. The pouch allows the pitcher to keep his finger out but it also hides it from the hitter or opposition.
