I never knew exactly what is piping. I would much appreciate someone explaining that.

Piping?

Postby bs » May 31st, 2008, 12:54 am

I am assuming you mean the welting on the finger backs of gloves.

Traditionally, welt it is a 3/16” thick piece of split leather sewn between each of the fingers. Most manufactures have switched to Clarino, which is a synthetic, because it is a much more consistent product than split leather. Today, some of the high end gloves have full grain welt. Full grain welt is regular glove leather that is split thin so it can be folded over and glued then it is sewn into the fingers just as traditional welt.

Or if you mean piping, it is the thin strip of leather, or ~shudder~ vinyl, that is sewn around the open edges of the glove

The leather or vinyl (another shudder) material that wraps around the wrist is also called binding.
