Jim Oglesby 1930s First Base Mitt

Postby briggs86 » September 11th, 2011, 11:40 pm

Hey Guys,

So I started cleaning off a bargain bin I picked up last week and came up with a Jim Oglesby endorsed first base mitt. I am not sure on the manufacturer as I didn't get into heavy cleaning around it, however I can read SPORTS RADIO going through the logo. Model number is BMO and reads genuine horsehide. So I did minor digging, this guy only played up for 3 games with the Athletics in 1936 and had 11 ab's and had a .182 avg. So a few questions. Is this a rare mitt? Has anyone seen an Oglesby? And why the heck did this guy even have an endorsed mitt given the fact he literally played for 3 games? Did minor leaguers get endorsed often?

Joe Phillips price guide list Oglesby as "very rare", meaning very few have turned up for sale. I believe that minor leaguers were offered endorsement contracts by glove companies, in the hopes that the player would make it big in the majors and the glove would become a top seller. I'm thinking that back in those days, a player didn't get a lot of money for a glove endorsement, and minor leaguers got even less. Joe might want to elaborate on this. At least Oglesby made it to the major leagues.

Has anybody compiled stats on endorsed gloves by players who never made it out of the minors? Andy Skurski comes to mind.

VIM Sports & Radio was a combination appliance/sporting goods outlet. This box held a VIM Dazzy Vance glove possibly made by Ken-Wel.. Maybe the VIM Oglesby was also made by Ken-Wel.

That's a nice mitt. One Ken-Wel catalog states that model having a special laced back. Do you have a pic?

Murph, that's a killer mitt. I was hoping it would have that wrist strap. The catalog illustration I saw doesn't do it justice.

yup just a factory error, JD has one on his site with the tag going the right way. The inside of the wrist strap had a good amout of lambs wool on it. Lucky to find it. Back in May at a Pawn shop in Delaware with 2 other gloves
