Ball player with catching and throwing gloves. They look to be a pair of Spalding models. Note the outseam construction, one piece face and tipped fingers of the catching glove.

Does that fingerless have two thumb holes, one on each side of the palm?? Or is it the padding....almost looks to be an ambidextrous fingerless...everyone heard of or seen one of those?? Ever exist?

Kinda looks that way, huh. The thing on the right is the thumb hole and the thing on the left is the padding. It's just spread open. It fits on the right hand as the tipped finger catchers glove obviously fits on the left. Two protruding thumb holes wouldn't be very practical for throwing so I can't imagine any were ambidextrous. Great set! I want 'em!!!

Not many pitched balls got by this catcher! Possibly an early A.J. Reach model catchers mitt. It's a beast. JD has one with a similar wrist strap design in the gallery. http://www.baseballglovecollector.com Always a reliable resource in identifying manufacturing brands.

I like this one. More goofing around in the dugout. A MacGregor salesman holding a really nice reverse button "Spiderweb" glove and a ball player behind holding up a Wilson model.

Really have enjoyed following all the pics and discussion. I found this picture and thought you guys might enjoy. Not sure if its a copy of a well known pic, or a one off. It's big and where its not sun bleached it sure looks sepia toned. Look close at the license plate and the year is 1914. I can't tell if the one guys wearing a base mitt or a fielders mitt.

Great promotional photo of Willie Mays just after the move to SF. He's sporting a unique MacGregor glove circa 1959. I have seen similar ones but not the exact model. The glove has the remnant of the "SpiderWeb" lace at the top of the glove and instead of a button, there is the newly designed laced wrist strap.

Below is a team photo circa 1890. The catcher looks to be holding a D&M Irwin's Improved catchers mitt.


Notice the pad sewn to the face of the mitt and the heavy rolled leather edge around the perimeter. This was a popular style back in the day.
One would think an example would have surfaced by now.
