Good glove photos are tough to find

Three early photos. First is circa 1910-15 and features four Michigan ballplayers with some gear.



Second is circa 1915. It is the Carpenter Co. baseball team and fans loaded unto a very heavy duty Gramm Motor Co. truck. I love this one! The Gramm Co. would custom make any cab design to fit their chassis. They were all different and some pretty weird. Notice the chain drive to the rear wheels.



This last is an earlier one from the 1890's. The catchers mitt the player is holding looks to be a Harry Decker design(aka Anna Burns Decker) from 1895. It may be one of the three piece mitts that was held together by lacing that wrapped around the perimeter band. Also, what is the piece of equipment at the players feet. Could that be a Redmond "funnel" mitt?

A Ray Schalk gamer mitt from the 1920's. it looks to be a Spalding with a lot of repairs





A D&M glove from the 1927 World Series belonging to Herb Pennock. This one went for quite a bit of money at auction.

Here are a couple from the late 60's. First is a MacGregor model KC1 worn by Willie Mays.

Second is a Spalding model 42-203 worn by Tom Seaver.

After I posted the Spalding "Jim Bunning" TraPocket glove at an ebay auction, I wondered what he used as his game glove. Here are a few photos through the years. I guess he was a Splading man. I think he used the "TraPocket" model for his '64 perfect game.

A real nice photo from 1886 of ball players with their gear.


The catcher is wearing a fingerless throwing glove on the right hand and a cool looking lace-up catching glove on the left hand. The catching glove looks to have leather tipped fingers.

A circa 1890 team photo from Ione, CA. Ione is in the "Gold Country" in the foothills east of Sacramento. Absolutely zany and great hand made uniforms and an eclectic assortment of gloves ranging form men's hand gloves to webless ball gloves to an extra puffy pillow mitt.

Cool pic! The more you look, the more wacky it becomes. In amongst all the distractions, I think the guy standing third from the right is wearing a tipped finger. Hard to tell with the shadows, but I think I see on one the thumb, and the closure looks right for a tipped era glove. Also, when I read "extra puffy pillow mitt", I was immediately drawn to the dark area near the guy seated on the left. Upon closer inspection I saw the dog's nose and it all came into focus. Ha! Must be the mascot, or maybe that job belongs to the guy with stovepipe ballcap (or is he wearing the bat bag on his head?). Oddly enough, I think the puffy mitt is actually a boxing glove. That might be a first.

It looks like the sleeveless uniforms were made from re-purposed burlap sacks. Also, the iron cross team logo is interesting. I wonder if the team was part of a fraternal organization. That may explain the elaborate outfit of the guy on far left.

Great looking uniform topped off with the ball player wearing a buckle web/buckle back glove! Lindsay is in the California central valley north of Bakersfield. California's agricultural heartland. Probably a farm boy with an orchard behind him.

Hal Newhouser and Dizzy Trout inset circa 1944. Newhouser managed to work a rolled lace through the top of the tunnel web on his Spalding glove. An MVP year for Newhouser with Detroit teammate Trout as runner-up. They both started a crazy number of games with records of 29-9 for Newhouser and 27-14 for Trout. Both had ERA's a little over 2.00.
