Thanks for the info Derek.
Below is a photo of Bob Gibson sporting a Spalding glove. He didn't have a personal model in the retail catalog but this one surfaced from an SCP auction about a decade ago. It's a model 42-2037. The provenance wasn't strong as a gamer so it sold for $715. A super nice glove in its own right.

Mikesglove, the Gibson PM in the pictures is superb, I was unaware that it even existed. Now I want one! Great Gibson photo, looks like he's using a Spalding 42-203 Don Drysdale PM. I thought at first it might be a Frank Bolling model as it shares the same web . The X-laced wrist strap was the deciding feature. Pics are from JDs gallery.

It's hard to find 1930-40's gloves and mitts that were clearly special orders. I found a pretty cool one though. It's a late 1930's Rawlings Jim Bottomley model base mitt. The retail version had the partially sewn/laced strap web. The mitt below has that strap and also ungraded with an additional sewn strap to form a T-bar web. The mitt has a thumb protector sewn completely around the thumb. Not something Rawlings would typically do. The really cool feature is the wrist strap eliminated the buckle and the strap was sewn directly to form a fixed wrist opening. It looks like Sunny Jim also cut a hole in the ring finger stall so he could place that finger outside the mitt. The original Rawlings Holdster slot. Hah! The mitt is from the Bottomley estate. It sold in an auction about 6 years ago for a little over $5K. Just click on the image to enlarge if interested.

A 1966 Wilson A2000 "Shooting Star" model with an H-web. It is stamped 374 on the back below the web. Another one of these surfaced recently and was stamped 509 below the web.

A interesting Rawlings HOH glove stamped XPG-2-SP-B glove. Looks like a 1960-70's model. Seller listed it as an "American Series" model from the 1990's. It doesn't look anything like them however. It's a cool glove in great condition. Maybe Derek knows more about it.

Mike,
Can't help on that one, it's the first I've seen. I agree though, it definitely appears to be from the 70's and not one of the American series. Here is another special order glove which sold recently for $24.99. Browsing Spalding catalogs from the 60s through to 1970 you may notice that Spalding never offered a "no-break" catchers mitt during that decade and yet here is a model 42-581 Joe Torre Personal Model. Appears to be the same mitt as Rawlings HOH X which made it's debut in the 1968 Rawlings catalog.

That's a nice mitt. A good buy for someone.

A 1960's Rawlings model XPGP HOH glove normally had a Speed Trap web.

The rare model below however has an H-web. That special order feature is coupled with a glove in pristine condition. Most H-web Rawlings gloves sell for a premium. This one sold on ebay for $2499.

Mike,
I was able to pick up the XPGP H web. I made an offer of $1650.00, the seller accepted. Only one I've ever seen.

Derek, I was wondering if you were going to take that leap. Good going!

A special MacGregor Kangaroo leather glove from 1966-67. The glove on the left is a special order model XKF18 glove. The glove on the right is the retail version KF8 glove. The main difference is the Fieldmaster web lacing reinforcement on the front and the back of the model XKF18. There was also some adjustment to the pocket lace. The XKF18 glove sold on ebay a while ago to someone in the know for $299. I wouldn't be surprised if Derek bought this.

The finger lacing was also substantially beefed up on the Model XKF18 glove on the left versus the model KF8 on the right.

Here's a rare one you won't find in the catalog. A circa 1970 Rawlings XPG3-H with the H-web.

When Warren Spahn and Willie Mays were teammates in the mid sixties, Spahn convinced Mays to order his model XPG3 glove. Mays modified the Warren Spahn model to his liking.

A 1960's Rawlings model XFG-H glove. Instead of the normal Basket Web, this one features an H-web. The glove is attributed to MLB player Lee May.

The 1967 KC2 glove above has X lacing on both sides of the web. This was an improvement on the 1966 KC2 model which had X lacing only on the back of the web.

Here's a neat photo of Rusty Staub with the special order H-web Rawlings XFG glove circa 1969-70.

Here's another of Staub circa with a Rawlings CMH-H special order base mitt with an H-web. He was with the Mets starting in 1972. The CMH mitt is 1962 model. Go figure.

Like Staub above, here's Mickey mantle with a retro model glove. The Advisory Staff photo most likely from 1967-68 when Mantle played first base. The mitt is a DCT model made from 1962-64 with the "Slim Wrist Snugger Adjustment". It has the "Patent Applied For" stamp on the back. The cloth patch on the wrist strap is something you don't see.

Below is a photo of Mantle with a similar "Patent Applied For" model with the cloth patch on the back of the mitt.
