Need some help dating a glove

Postby css79 » October 3rd, 2016, 4:11 pm

I recently picked up a Rollie Hemsley endorsed catcher's mitt at an estate sale and have not been able to date it. It was made by Hutchens and Potter out of Johnstown, N.Y. and is model 1000C. My guess is it is either the 1930s or 1940s. Thanks.

That's an interesting brand. I've never heard of them. Post a photo if you can. One quick resource to date the mitt is google the players name and look in a baseball reference at the height of a players career till the end. That will give you a rough idea. The mid 1930's into the 40's is about right. Also, buy a copy of the "Vintage Baseball Glove Catalog Source Book" for more details. Look at http://www.baseballglovecollector.com and type in Hemsley in the search window and see what photos comes up.

I've heard of the H&P brand before. I didn't know what that stood for. It's a nice mitt. Looks to be 1940's vintage. Good find!
