What's on Your "Want List"?

Postby Mr. Mitt » April 22nd, 2013, 9:11 pm

Going over my “Want List” today, haven’t done that in a while, and came to realize that it’s become pretty short. I’ve checked some things off that I’ve gotten and scratched some others off as I’ve lost interest given a change of focus. Thought it would be a fun idea to begin a thread listing current “wants”, general or specific, so others could potentially help fill those holes. Would also be interesting to see if any patterns emerge and if collecting interests among the group as a whole have shifted as mine has.

Hmmm. Great topic. You got me thinking, and no, it doesn't hurt. I think you are right that tastes change over time. For nearly 20 years I have collected 1" webs and full webs in off-brands as I have always loved the idea of a truly rare glove. I think I have taken that about as far as I can as I don't see too many new ones and I'm not adding anything new lately. Maybe it's time to start disassembling that subset slowly. I don't know. Still on the fence. Maybe I'll switch my focus to 1" webs in the box.

What do I want? Since I can't afford a tipped finger catchers glove, a fingerless glove or a teens ambi, then I would say I still need to check a few things off the list:

- Horace Partridge Babe Ruth
- Lowe & Campbell pre-war 3
- Stall & Dean pre-war 3
- Marathon Carl Hubbell 60-4220 Mint
- Would also like to get another Nokona 1" web if one exists

Can't think of anything else. What about you?

1. A Victor glove or mitt with cloth patch
2. A Sell brand glove or mitt.
3. A "Rainey Trap" glove.
4. A Goldsmith "Valdez Modelo" glove
5. MacGregor "Red Schoendienst" model GC1 glove with picture pocket.

1) Vermont tagged pre-war glove - this will finish my New England set!
2) HIgh end Sonnett gloves from the 1960's I'm still missing
3) William & Read Sons 1B mitt
4) Horace Partridge Catchers Mitt
5) Catalogs - Sonnett/OK, Bon Tober, McDonald Wilker, William Read, other New England companies
6) Sonnett bowling ball and case

I've moved away from endorsed gloves. Don't get me wrong, it was a terrific persuit of HoFers and team sets, but I needed a change. Even collecting different models of a few particular players was fun. I've pared down signature models to only the ones that are special to me. Going forwward, I think I'd only go after a D&M 651 Gehrig, if one ever pops up, and a really nice condition Spalding WW Ruth. If the condition and price on a Cobb or Wagner were right, I could see myself going in that direction again, but I've had the fortitude not to go down that road in a while. Down the line, who knows!

The two words that describe my current focus are condition and age. I'm on the lookout for 19th century gloves and mitts and pre-WWI examples of unique design and construction in the best possible condition. I'd love to come across more 19th century models with manufacturer markings (patches or stampings). To find a Peck & Snyder marked glove at some point would be the ultimate! Things that we know exist from catalogs but haven't been unearthed, like a fingerless with a tie-up lace back, a fingerless with a full pinkie (affectionatly known a the "stinky pinkie" fingerless) or a lace-up tipped finger glove would fit the bill nicely. As far as exact models, the Victor Conqueror FTF three-finger model has been on my want list since the beginning. Also, a Stall & Dean with a griffon patch would be cool.

I need a cover when I go to the bowling alley. My real aim there is to pull a lobster harmonica and Harvard diploma from the Claw Machine.

Well, I finally knocked the bowling case off my list - took a lot longer than I thought. You may all commence with your snide comments. 8)
