Coaches bat

Postby hal barth » May 24th, 2012, 12:04 pm

I recently bought a Joe Dimaggio model baseball bat. The lettering on the knob reads: D29L. The bat is 35.5 inches long. I understand this is a coaches bat. Can someone tell me the significance of this as opposed to a store bought bat or a game bat?

Depending on the markings it could be a coaches bat, a show bat or a professional model bat.

A coaches bat is one that was made for a player to us while a coach. So for Joe it would be for his time he worked with the Oakland A's. You would need provenance to date it to his use. From time to time some dealers have gotten H&B to make for them professional model bats to sell in the market, so that is a possibility. Then the show bat which is a lesser grade of wood that is made just for the autograph hobby

Thanks , Murphusa, your information is very helpful to me. I had never heard the term, coaches bat before. This bat does have the patina of an older bat.

If you post a picture of the label and give us the length and weight we can probably narrow down the year for you.

Posting these pictures for hal. Going by Vince Malta's book the bats looks to date to the late 60's. According to same source, Joe ordered one D29L in 1967 (36" 36 oz) and six in 1968 (36" 37 oz)
