February 2011 Additions

Postby vintagebrett » February 25th, 2011, 8:39 pm

It's been awhile since I've added some nice pieces to my collection but this month has been kind. First up is an OK MFG Co. model 752 glove that was on eBay. When I took this out of the package I was even more excited and then when I put my hand in, I didn't want to take it off. It's definitely one of the nicest, early OK models in my collection. I have the corresponding catalog literature to go with the glove.

Second is the Sonnett box with Albie Pearson model AP524 that was in Hunt's auction. This box is from one of the last two years of production and I think they are a lot harder to find - this is the first baseball glove I've seen - there is a football box in my collection that is almost identical in style. The glove is mid-line but it's never been used and has a nice color to it.

Third was the mint Sonnett model 5448 Mike Hershberger that jeneli auctioned off at the beginning of the month. I had let this glove slip through my fingers once before and wanted to make sure to get it the second time around. It was an upgrade over the one I had and now I don't have to worry about finding another (unless it has a box). This glove is from the 1965 line but unfortunately I don't have the catalog to post a picture from.

And lastly, this was the Spalding trophy I got way back in October. My pictures of it sucked but the photographer who did the pictures for the t206 book was able to capture it's beauty.

When I bookmarked the 752 glove I thought it was an interesting model. Nice to see the literature along with it. I'm wondering what is stamped in white across the wrist strap in the ad.

Gasp! The Sonnetts, in a way, were in a class by themselves. The type faces and designs they picked out for their gloves and bold/deep stamping sets them off. Patches also stand out. And you gotta love
the boxes.
Wise collectiong Brett.

Seeing the close ups of this glove and the uniform, straight stitching reminds me that my Grandfather, William A Sonnett, was always a fanatic about straight and even stitching. When Japanese gloves started to invade the American market in the 1960's, my father, William J. Sonnett, said to me one day that the quality of the Japanese gloves was really quite good with one glaring exception. The stitching was not straight on the seams.
I just happened on this site and was fascinated by the interest in collecting Sonnett baseball gloves. My grandfather William A. Sonnett and my father William J. Sonnett are the gentlemen who founded and ran the company.

William,

Welcome to the thread and we are glad you have found the website. Brett Lowman has a great Sonnet and OK collection of gloves so you found the right spot to talk Sonnet gloves. Welcome.
