Best of January 2011

Postby okdoak » January 3rd, 2011, 12:32 am

First one of the New Year came with a very deceptive description and photos to match. It was listed as a "circa 1900 vintage work man style baseball glove" but the fine print mentioned a small web. The original pictures had the glove posed so that the web couldn't be seen. A picture of the web was added later after someone asked about it. This isn't the first time that this seller (mearsdb) has done this. Anyway, it started with a $249 minimum and ended at $310.89 on 2 bids.

"Oh what a wicked web (pun intended) we weave, when we practice to deceive."
I'm glad we've got some sharp eyed eagles around. Thanks OK.

here is a link of the current ebay glove to the original MEARS auction in 2009. No mention of a web!

Here is a little history of the glove:

It's got a neat tag but it is very small.

Is this the same glove that MEARS had on ebay last April? I wish I would have downloaded pictures of that auction instead of just showing the link now. If so, maybe they should try selling it for what it really is if it comes back to them for the umpteenth time!?

I've just read the MEARS description and pictures, and my question is why the photos taken without showing the obvious web? Disappointing -- but I've seen and read a lot of "disappointed" posts and disgruntlement with MEARS activities. The "Wicked Web", pardon.
As we've all discussed a "TRUE" workman's baseball glove will NOT have any type of web or crescent exterior padding, otherwise they are called what they are. A workman baseball glove looks like a workman or "brakeman" glove that would be used by those persons in those professions.
And there's no mention of size of the glove? Very important to the potential buyers! :(

The glove Joe mentions from the Halper collection appears to be a turn of the century mitt but a youth model because of the thumb seam on the face and the materials used

Just a bit curious, and this angle hasn't been discussed yet, but isn't it odd that the same seller has sold the same glove three times? It sold in a MEARS internet auction in 2009, then by Mears on eBay this past April, then recently again by Mears on eBay. Has it been returned each time or is there something else, more suspicious, afoot?

My sense of the MEARS glove is that it was returned for a refund twice and now newly sold. This recent auction may be the only one the web was pictured. Greg commented on that. it will be interesting if it pops up again this spring. The Halper mitt now on ebay may be just another one of those unfortunate situations where a high price was paid for an average mitt from a big auction house and the ebay seller now wishes to use the cachet of the "Barry Halper Collection" to re-sell the mitt and persuade a bidder it is worth $500. I have been there myself unfortunately and taken a drubbing. The inside cover of Joe's current "The Vintage Baseball Glove Catalog Source Book" says it all, "Knowledge is Power in Vintage Equipment".

It seems that anything that comes with Barry Halper's name associated with it should have a "buyer beware" tag attached to it.

Looks like the same Babe Ruth HR Special mitt that was posted last month. Went for $101 this time around.

I don't collect catcher's mitts, but I liked the looks of this one. Diamond brand sold for $60.
