Recent D&M Pickup

Postby cubsrno1 » March 28th, 2009, 9:13 pm

Just got this D&M single tunnel loop in the mail today. The seller stated that he could not figure out the endorsement. Well, it turns out the it was endorsed by Al Mamaux. Who is he? After a google search, I found out that he pitched for the Pirates, Brooklyn Robins and a brief stint with the Yankees.
I'm not much for endorsed gloves but this has me wondering whether I have a gamer. I certainly don't think that there were any store models for Al Mamaux. Plus, this glove looks and feels top of the line. Also, I have searched the source book and some D&M listings and did not find his model.

I could certainly use some help on this glove. Any D&M experts out there or maybe one who has knowledge of this glove.

Joel

I missed it and so did another good autograph ID friend but another may
have the answer on the name:
Joe...don't know what year the glove is, but my best guess would be Al Mamaux...played from 1913-1924. Pitched for the Pirates from 1913-1917; Brooklyn Robins till 1923; and pitched for the Yankees in 1924. Toddeo

I've seen lots of gloves over the years that had endorsements of people who never played, one off's etc. - it's so hard to determine what the glove was actually for. Could be a gamer, could be a prototype, could be a gift made for player/family? Lot's of interesting scenarios. Great piece.

Eerily similar to those high quality blond/white D&M gloves discussed in the past as potential gamers, prototypes or gifts from D&M to the players; Alexander, Kelly, Vance, Meusal and dare I say it... can I speak his name... Jackson. I guess since it's not cataloged, it doesn't exist... that glove you just received in the mail, Joel, is simply an apparition!

Does anybody know off the top of their head if these guys listed were ever honored in the same year for something? Sort of like a Gold Glove award? I see the fielders mitts and one 1B mitt - where's the catchers mitt that fits into the equation?

Thanks to all that replied. I did a little more research and found a 1923 D&M catalog on JD's site. It listed a number of players that used and endorsed the G40 model. Included in that list is Al Mamaux. So, it is possible that the glove I have is a store model. Just seemed too high quality to be that.
