Rawlings Blackhorse Code

Postby oakfan33 » November 22nd, 2008, 11:54 am

The Blackhorse code only deciphers one number for the year the glove was made. How does one know if the year is in the 80's or 90's?

There are subtle deisign / stampings differences. Some only Doc could tell...? Have an example?

for example the wording "Gold Glove Series" does not show up on gloves until 1990.

I think you're right Ed...I have an '83 without, and an '88 with for sure

i know there are more pressing issues that i should be losing sleep on(the economy, my 401K)

i have this proH AEL01 with the cool thumb script and model stamping on the heel.

so, can we conclude that in february 1983 they were still using the vintage "R" nickel patch, edge-u-cated-heel AND the black horse code has emerged?

and i know gold snorting bulls are nothing to get excited about but back then i think it was kinda cool on the tan mods (albeit that it didn't hold up well)

I was basing the Gold Glove Series appearance from Joe's book on collecting vintage gloves/mitts. The first time it shows up in the Rawlings price lists is 1990.

I have been trying to assemble a timeline for the Rawlings HOH series that would include 5 dot codes, Blackhorse and 4 letter codes, etc to be better able to date gloves when I see them. Your information is helpful (GGS as early as 1983/84) esp since you purchased when new and can date it.
