Anyone had problems with brass gromets turning green?

Anyone had problems with brass gromets turning green? I've got an old Goldsmith George Grantham Baseman's mit, a grat piece of leater, except the brass gromets have a green "rust" or decay to them. Does anyone know a product that would take card of that w/o harming the leather?

When I get gloves like this the best thing i have found is to gently clean the green areas with a toothbrush. This will remove much if not all of the loose the buildup without damaging the glove in the process. Good luck.

I just pick it off with a metal mechanical pencil (because it's durable and it's what I had laying around) and then brush it away with a dry toothbrush. I haven't tried Brasso on grommets as I wouldn't want to get it on the leather. I recommend Brasso on buttons though.

CAUTION, that green crap stains carpets. Just my two cents.

I think this is an oxidation problem with the oil left on the glove over a period of time. Alcohol or GooGone cleans this with toothbrush or toothpick working in and around the grommets but you don't want to get too much on leather without reconditioning it. Kinda yucky stuff I agree but fairly easy to remove, with some care exercised.

Similar problem - several rivets have come out on a catcher's mitt I have. Can I glue them back in place or does anyone have a suggestion about htis repair?

They need to be reset with a grommet tool. It's a fairly easy fix if you can gain access to them by unlacing the glove. Don't glue them though.
